Im sure all of you have thought of making a ceramic pipe or bong, and how cool you could make them... but no one seems to have a kiln, and the school sure as hell won't let you get away with making such things. I have recently come across a clay called Ovencraft, supposedly just like regular clay, only it can be fired in your oven at 350. Its uses online seem to be for making miniatures, jewelery, and small crafts. It is said not to be food or water safe, but hardens, and i personaly think it would be great fun for making pipes. What do you all think?
yea.... that works great for pipes..... i dont know if thats the same as Fimo clay... but that also can be cooked in an oven.... but i've seen that ovencraft stuff at walmart.... shit is cheap too
Sorry for the double post, but I also found Polymer Clays... Links: http://www.dickblick.com/zz332/17/ http://www.dickblick.com/zz332/28/ http://www.dickblick.com/zz332/36/ And considering furthor, I have seen cautions that baking at higher temperatures can give off smokes, and Im no genius, but I think a lighter is hotter than 300 degrees F.
I've decided to fuck buying pipes lol, Im a Clay II student, I sure as hell can handle a lil pipe! Think I am gonna steal some clay tools from school! Where can I buy me some polymer clay... I dun think walmart carries it.
I've read Femo Fumes are poisonous.... Do not make bongs or pipes from polymer clay, like rolling your smoking material in that plastic grocery bag, just not safe to do. http://www.erowid.org/psychoactives/faqs/faq_bong_pipe.shtml don't make pipes from Femo, incidentally; fumes are highly poisonous http://www.norajean.com/Rambles/PolymerClayFAQ.htm Seems logical, but then again all the pictures i've seen of polymer clay, especialy the transperent stuff, makes it look like it turns to glass after its cooked, Edit:But I have discovered my local walmart sells a type of polymer clay with no warnings or anything of poisonous. Maybe that talk is just rumors to keep people away from pipe making.
polymer clay = PVC plastic... as in plastic water pipes burn it and you get chlorin gas....it will damage your lungs or kill you
What about after its glazed? Artists commonly talk about using Flecto Varathane Elite Diamond Finish from hardware stores to glaze there pots. commonly just called Flecto glaze. With Flecto you apply it, and re-cook it to establish a stronger glaze, which seems worth playing with/testing to me.
personally i would not take the chance with the glaze...chlorine gas is that poisonous...they used it in world war 1 .....not worth it you could use metal parts and wrap the polymer clay around it to decorate.......that could work
here's a google search for "how to make clay pipes". i'm sure you should be able to find what kind of materials to use here:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...official&q=how+to+make+clay+pipes&btnG=Search
Any of you that think Polymer clay is dangerous at all... should read this article. http://www.pcpolyzine.com/april2001/issues.html Editutting the idea of Polymer clay aside, due to the fact that some of you seem to say its unsafe and whatnot... Apoxie Clay Nonflamable, NonToxic That sounds safe to me!
i would stay away from all those other ones btw, the first one posted(link) that shit burns eaily, im a ceramincs 2 course thing, and we fired some of that shit, we did low n slow and that shit burnt quite quicky. i would stick with normal shit and slip it in the kiln b4 its closed and remove it and hide it when unloading kiln, same does for aftr you glaze it(asumming thats the method your doing), i duno how thought cause stilts can leave those gay hole mark things and it you leave it on the shelf it will melt the the piece to it,. ahahah btw i have a hippie naturalist and me and her are friends and she lets me make pipes n shit
Just get some self hardening clay. You don't need a kiln or an oven, just a day or two of drying time. That's what I use. Sculpey Self Hardening clay. Check your local art store. It's real clay, not polymer "clay."
my bestfriend just got one from her sister carved out of stone with a bud and her name carved out and then caulked in with blue caulk, it was really cool
has no one noticed how commercial pipes integrating fimo into the design keep it pretty much strictly around the stem in most cases? and even then they just wrap the stuff around a metal stem, i think. just because stuff like this isn't labeled as toxic doesn't mean you can inhale the fumes that are created when you add a flame to the stuff. it generally means a toddler playing with it isn't too likely to die if he eats just a little bit. adding heat is one of the more common way to create changes in a substance's chemical components, and i'd assume this is what happens. thats why it needs to be fired at a really low temperature. personally, i would NEVER smoke out of a fimo pipe. period. if you don't have your own kiln or don't have access to one or something, try the real self-hardening clay someone was talking about.
the school i went to... they'd be real asses about it.... you could make a bong out of clay... or say a pipe out of metal in metals class.... but then after you made it.. they'd come up and take it from you and destroy it infront of you.... like he'd pull your bong out of the kiln and then smash it... i'd be like "you fucker!"
I just made an all fimo pipe, it seems to have no problems... I played around with burning small baked pieces of it, and it takes about 7-10 seconds of direct flame to start getting it to burn, smoknig from it is fine as long as the flame stays on the weed. And the gas it gives off is not good for you, but its not gonna kill me.
