any one know anything about the relationship between these two? i have heard they are connected (it makes sense.. 28 days and 28 days) but what exactly does the moon have to do with our periods? do you think that the cycle of the moon with which you corespond has something to do with what's going on with you personally?

i don't know if this is true, but i once read that if you slept under natural outdoor light and darkness that your cycles would be more likely to line up with the phases of the moon.

Also, when two women are close: living together, working closely together, etc., generally spending several hours per day together... Their cycles will often start to synch-up. For instance, when I moved in with my sister, her periods began starting earlier and mine began starting later, until we were on the same schedule (within a few days of each other).

(it makes sense.. 28 days and 28 days)

Well, it would make sense if women's periods actually were 28 days, but of course they're often longer or shorter than that. So a woman with a 29 day cycle actually matches the moon what, every 812 days. Not too often!

But perhaps if people lived outdoors and had significant changes in their activity level when there was a full moon versus no moon, women's cycles would indeed get linked up with the moon's phases. Has anyone ever studied whether this is true in tribal societies? It sounds interesting. Perhaps there was some time in human history when having more light (or no light!) made a difference in when people had sex, or something that afected reproduction?

Let's see--if a full moon made it easier for men and women to find each other, then a woman's cycle would be arranged so she was most fertile at the full moon, and had her period at the darkest time. Or if the logic was needing darkness to sneak away to a spot where the rest of the tribe couldn't see what a couple was doing, it would be the opposite!

Or could it be not the time people had sex, but the time when babies were born, that made the difference? If the length of a pregnancy is close to 40 weeks from the woman's last period, that might say that menstrual periods and childbirth are both best done under a full moon.

    Actually, Amontillado, you are correct.

We are supposed to be full and ripe at the full moon, and bleed at the new moon. Thanks to artificial lighting, hormones in our food, and lack of exercise and proper nutrition, most of us no longer bleed when we are supposed to.

But yes, if a woman were to go live on top of a mountain. Away from artificial lighting. And if she grew her own food organically... Then her cycles would begin to match the cycles of the moon. :)

And to answer the other question... Why do women's cycles begin to synch up when they spend a lot of time together? Because we are all connected. And hormones/pheremones play a bigger part in our lives than we are capable of seeing...

I've always felt a connection to the moon (especially being a Cancer) but I've always noticed an extreme restlessness and urge of creativity during the full moon. I always get my period during a full moon which someone says is not right because womyn are supposed to bleed during the new moon, but it feels right to me. One of the biggest downfalls (which also happens to work as a main source of inspiration to me) is that I get extremely emotional due to getting my period and the full moon. Sometimes it works against me ;) but usually I can reap some benefits from feeling that certain kind of energy that only womyn can really know what I'm talking about.
Thank you Michael, for supplying those websites. I copied one of them to my desktop because I found it truly fascinating.

THAT is actually true. WOmyn who live in areas without ARTIFICIAL light (which messes up our perception of moonlight and thus our periods) actually almost always MENSTRUATE in the NEW MOON (darkness) and OVULATE (more fertile) in the FULL MOON.

In our society, we have lights on most of the night, and artificial lights in the dark of the moon, so we don''t have this happen as it does in natural cultures.

Womyn put out phermones when they ovulate and menstruate, just like all animals, and other womyn can detect these phermones and this causes the womyn to ovulate together. In societies where there are a lot of womyn living together, it is beneficial to all menstruate at the same time.

You and I have many synchronous ideas, Ms. Sugar.... :)

I generally bleed CLOSE to the new moon (a few days after it, actually)... How 'bout you? :)

That is when I bleed, too. :D Moon sister!

It seems like I am always looking at the full moon, ou the window, while we are having sex, I want it more when I am ovulating. (Scary, from my POV at this point! As I am in perimenopause and we are done having children, but I am still fertile.)
