I was just wondering if any of you guys were into organic living. right now i just turned vegetarian and have been doing the organic thing for about 5 months.
The few organic foods here are probebly twice as expensive then the regular ones..........so nope... not me. There is a Vegetarian Forum, by the way, you will find more productive responses there.
I don't eat red meat or poultry. I try to make sure that all the food that I buy is organic. Probably about 95% of all the food I have is organic. It's not really that much more expensive here, especially produce since there are tons of organic farms here and I like to support them as much as I can.
I've done that stuff for many years, tho' I switched back to eating meat. No pork! but other meat, yes. organic, whether vegetarian or not, is an important choice to make for your health and the health of the planet! not only do you not get the toxic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc., but you are getting more mineral content. in the sixties, after the Korean War there was a surplus of phosphorus and other minerals due to the underemployment of the weapons industry. some feckin' genious came up the the idea to start using these surpluses in another product to carry them through the more peaceful times. they found a way to replace traditionaly soil replenishment with chemical fertilizers. the human body uses something like 77 different trace elements in cellular activity - elements that must be consumed somehow. some may be ingested through the lungs, exposure to sunlight, etc, but most must be acquired through the solid and liquid foods. conventional farming consists of mono-culture farming, which requires extraordinary volumes of pest control chemicals, all toxic as hell to the human organism. but also, they grow the same crop year after year and even if they do rotate crops, the only three elements that are supplemented are typically phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen. this is what the three number symbol refers to, like 6-6-6, 10-15-10, etc. organic farming, and biodynamic farming are holistic methods and in accordance with the Tao if done right. live long, and prosper.
I recently discovered that free-range orgainic chicken actually tastes better than regular chicken, so I now it that. And if a product is organic it might make me more inclined to buy it, but I'm not too obsessed with it all. The way I see it, I'm gonna die someday, so why stress out about the petty details in life? -Kate
I don't consider the use of poisons to grow our food, poisons that harm the environment, to be petty at all. I don't do it for my own health, I'm not to concerned abou that. I do it for the health of the planet and also to support local farms. And I don't consider that petty.
I buy only organic dairy and buy most of my groceries at Wild Oats or Vitamin Cottage, but I don't pay attention to the organic nature of anything else in my world.
What I meant by petty was that I already have plenty of stresses and issues going on in my life at the moment, and I don't want to spend two hours at the grocery store making sure everything I buy is organic (I live in tx, where organic shopping can be quite a chore). If I see something I like that's org. vs. non org., then I'll probably buy the org. one, provided it's not twice as expensive. And I would like to add that I have nothing against people who shop organic. -Kate
I understand where you're coming from. I guess I just get so used to living here where you have to actually work to get something that is NOT organic
60's pot was weak compared to today's, thank science. today's tomatoes are bigger, juicier and stronger than ever, and with all the pesticide, fewer bugs. the hell i'm paying $4 for an emaciated banana. and when it comes to the meat i eat only animals that have been tickled to death.
If I were in any other position than the one I live in I would have to eat so much less, because my body is used to such good food. When was the last time I bought an organic tomato? Maybe three weeks ago, but I've been eating them almost every day since. I am a spoiled rotten bitch, because I work at a coop with crazy high standards on what we sell. I'm in boxes full of fresh organic produce for free, with a discount on what I have to buy. In my city, myself and the people I work with are the best fed people...I'm hooked. Can I ever go back to supermarket shopping? No, I'm fucked. That shit is expensive. Until everybody starts shopping organic, and all they grow is organic, it's damn expensive. Garlic just went up to four ninety-nine a pound. It used to be two ninety-nine. Now we have to carry conventional garlic. We're an inner-(poverty vs. affluence) city store, on a corner. The majority of our produce is organic because the store is tiny, with no room for conventional lacinata kale. If you want lacinata, you're paying for organic -you'll get plenty for a dollar ninety-nine though. Garlic everybody needs, of course, but why must we seperate our vegetables into class factions? Organic shopping needs to be a reality, there needs to be no other option because conventional farming is not sustainable. People only support it because it's cheaper and the majority of us, myself included, are living on wages. I'm only lucky.

So there I was, northern queensland, humpin' (pickin') bananas with a bunch of foreigners (backpackers). That's hard work, 70lbs. of bagged herb on your shoulder, poisonous snakes and spiders always on yer mind, machete swingin' 'round yer head, not to mention the heat. BUt the scenery was swell: big, big fawkin' green hills and the pacific ocean in the distance, the girls with the accents. Anyhoo, bananas of all kinds were consumed by these thrifty, wandering souls, and it's been the combined experience of my many nations friends that organic bananas are emaciated and tasteless, more likely to be infested, and believe it or not more prone to mutation, which made them the crowd favourites during the weird banana contest at the brother's league on friday night. organic siamese bananas are common, but its the organic banana that looks as if it has swallowed a few golf balls that takes home the prize (bottle of bundy rum - 1st place, 6-pack of whatever for 2nd). The poisoned-filled banana sap isn't as irritating either. and mutant bananas are thrown out, 'cause no one wants to eat mutants, loss of profits. maybe all them horrible poison chemicals aren't so bad, maybe they're there for a reason... maybe banana scientists do nothing all day but concoct subtle poisons that eat at the human liver? Now why would a banana scientist do that? Let's all be happy we're eating bananas.
Cloned bananas, which would be "regular" ones, are theoreticly "Banana perfection", organic bananas cannot posibly be better than them, that is a scientific fact.
cool.... that sounds like it'd make good banana bread. top it with some organic butter from massaged cows. that's good and natural livin'
Well, maybe the stores here just find the most unattractive unappealing regular bananas that they can possibly find so that the organic ones will look more appetizing. Because I swear that the organic ones look and taste better. Having never compared the two in any other place, I don't know whether this is a normal thing, it probably isn't. But I'm thinking it is a conspiracy.
