"When that lone, young Chinese man stood in front of those tanks in Tiananmen Square, America's hopes stood with him. And when Nelson Mandela smiled in election victory after all those years in prison, America celebrated, too." yeah, our country and our leadership does get into some stupid, painful nonsense. but i do believe to my core that once informed, most of us do pray for the best, and celebrate other's victories. we're invigorated when someone fights for their freedom. if only our policies would reflect that.
I bet the same happened when the USA "took over" Hawaii from its Queen and their efforts in Cuba have failed. Fuck Arnold.
well, I just mean that "victory" is very relative. If L.A. manages to become a seperate republic, than whose victory would it be?
well, yeah. exactly. why is it when we cheer people overcoming their oppressors but then conveniently forget that we can be oppressors, too? because we're americans and we're somehow better? as with in the situation in iraq, i'm sure the old saying "greet the new boss same as the old boss" could come into play there.
you know, most of the people i come across really do mean well, but they're not thinking through all the ramifications of their simple-minded idealistic actions. then, when the shit hits the fan, they sit there and look confused and get mad at people being irritated with them because now their shit's worse off than before. i'm not just referring to iraq in this. people want to be a conquering hero, not realizing that people in trouble don't want the conquerer, they need the hero. someone just willing to help and to listen. but people are so sure that their ideals and their good intentions will totally justify the impending clusterfuck. but they're not the ones left mopping up the mess. it's just kinda sad.
Arnold's speech was excellent. Public speaking must be in his blood, because his father, Gustav Schwarzenegger, was a Nazi, and most Nazis excel at public speaking.
Just what the sheep eat up in the US, celebrity politics, all image and don't scrutinise the substance.
just as problematic is not bothering to listen to anyone at all because of preconceived notions. thought provoking statements can come from the most bizarre places i've found.
Rumor has it that Awnold is pushing for an amendent to the constitution that allows immigrants the opportunity to run for President. This I'm not too against. If anyone's seen the movie Commando - its pretty obvious that Awnold could go over to Iraq and take on the whole country all by himself. Maybe then the troops could come home.
lol. yeah. but there would be that potential conflict of interest with austria, maybe. it's a worst case scenario thing, not likely, but someone will bring it up.. but i think anyone should be able to run. whether or not they'll be elected is an entirely different story.
nope. he's not. i heard that, too. i wouldn't worry about it, though, since the republicans who are going to want to run for pres won't allow it. racist groups who hate anyone with an accent won't allow it. dems won't allow because they hate arnold. it's not gonna happen.
It's absolutely fucking HILARIOUS that Arnold would have the audacity to even MENTION China - since the US has since named China it's "most favored nation" and is bankrolling what is one of the most oppressive regimes on the planet. The South Africa reference is also amusing, since it was the republican party that objected to boycotting trade with that nation...lol...fucking hypocrites.
but in the spirit of even the stopped clock being right twice a day, i did like that quote, as it did represent the majority of my friends and family.
