A few months ago I was nursing Jimmy at a pool party. I was trying to be discreet without smothering Jimmy under a towel. Next to me were 2 of my DH's friends, both flamenco dancers. One is a tall, GORGEOUS, gay russian man and it was because of him that I was trying to be so discreet. So anyway. He notices me battling with J to stay covered and asks what am I doing and do I need help. I told him I was nursing my baby and I was trying to make sure I was covered. He looked puzzled and asked my why I would care. I explained to him that a lot of people get offended at the sight of a mother nursing her baby. I tell you, he burst into tears! He was sitting next to me, watching J peer up at him with a mouth full of boob, crying! "It is so natural and beautiful for a mother to feed her baby! It makes me so sad to think that somebody would be offended by it." He said this! Awwwww. What a big squish! So hubby and I comforted him and now we laugh about it. It IS a nice change of pace to have someone, especially someone so unlikely (or maybe not, eh?) be supportive of breastfeeding.
Interesting story. Sometimes we don't realize how sick this country is about breast feeding and sex in general until we see the more relaxed and open attitudes of people from other countries.
I tell ya, I love European views on bfing. (except maybe UK...depending on who I talk to, the reaction is different...) It is so sad that people equate bfing to masturbating. What sex-freaks!
that was so sweet. I just wish more people were like that over here It's like bfing isn't even thought of anymore...it's sad how many people have asked me about what kind of formula I plan on using once the baby is born...
When its come to a point where pouring compounded cow breast milk which has been factory processed and tinned into plastic bottles with teat-like things on the end and shoving that into the babys mouth is viewed as more natural than feeding your baby from your breast then somethings pretty wrong with the world I understand in many cases bottle feeding is necessary and obviously it is not "wrong" or anything. What im trying to say is breast feeding is the MOST natural thing. I cant even believe people comment about it And when it gets linked to sex...that shows REAL problems in peoples minds. I got over the boobie-nursing thing when I found myself on an early morning commuter flight from Colorado to California. Surrounded by men in suits. Funny thing happened, it was the one "corporate" woman who gave me a look. By then I was like, up yours lady!
