Kerouac's original typescript is to be published Aug 16th (US) and Sep 6th (UK). Apparently includes passages of an explicit nature that were edited out of the original published version.

I'd really love to read that.. read that it was written on 12 foot sheets of paper taped together with no paragraph breaks...

ypu...just a big spool of paper so that Kerouac could type in his emblematic "stream of consciousness" style..... he typed that whole book in 3 days on benzedrine. I cant wait to get a hold of that copy myself.

I saw the Original Scroll a few months ago as part of hte On the Road with the Beats traveling exhibit. It was pretty cool. I got in trouble for taking pics but I did it anyway!

I'm actually reading it right now. Makes me want to get up and hitchhike without a care in the world. Sadly, these are very different times and I believe there are more laws against the act of hitchhiking. That makes me a sad hippie.

    yeah.........
Kerouac influenced me a lot. I was reading a series of books by Ann M Martin (yes babysitters club author) and they were quite deep for a depressed 16 y.o (california diaries). One of them met a guy on the venice beach boardwalk while bunking off school one day and he hitchedhiked everywhere. He recommended on the road to her....... and thats how i found out about Kerouac lol

Is the scroll all that different from the published book? Is it worth reading if you have read the book?

I have a copy of that and my favorite thing about it is that it refers to the charictor of dean as neal cassidy which is who dean is based on.

Holy shit, this sounds awesome. Plan to read in the future... is it referred to as "The Scroll" though?

I posted about this in another thread about On the Road.
I'll say again, though, that the Original Scrolls version is AMAZING. I haven't read the original version, and I'm actually afraid to after having read the Original Scrolls, as it is such a tough act to follow.

I bought the Scroll as I was finishing the '57 version.
Sooo good! Read it right after I finished the "original".
I do recommend the '57 version though, but I also feel the Original Scroll is "better".

Afterreading The Origobal Scroll, I don't think it'll be possible to go back to the edited version. It just seems liek a more complete book.
