I have a severe phobia of the elderly, with the exception of my grandparents. Really old people are like animals. They come out in droves, really early in the morning to do their shopping and they stand around like seagulls waiting for people to put out the discounted bread and meat. They become agitated when things aren't on time, or where they normally are and you have to tell them off for being petulant like spoilt four year olds. The have no spatial awareness and as a result, they clog up roads, malls, supermarket aisles and footpaths. It is getting to a point now where I will run away and hide if I see a decrepid old man in flip glasses and a cardigan approach me.

Sitting in a chair all day watching rubbish current affairs programs and reading Catherine Cookson novels does not appeal to me. I hope I die before I reach 60.

Old people freak me out too... I talk to a lot of them on the phone at work, sometimes I have to distaract myself so that i don't think about what the person on the other end of the phone sounds like...

I told my Mom that at one point of time, and she was really pissed.

Really older people carry the feeling of death with then that you can't just shake off.... worse feeling in the world.

I used to sort of feel like you Face. I thought that old people were just that, old people. Like some kind of other species and then one day about seven years ago I was in London at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day and there were all these tiny withered crooked old geezers hobbling around with poppies.

I sort of had a revelation as I was studying this one guy. I thought of all the things he had done in his life, his loves, his broken hearts, his dreams, his lost friends, all the ups and downs he must have gone through. I thought of him especially on the battlefield pouring over the charred remains of friends, going home to give the bad news to some of their families, writing love letters.

I thought of all the shitty days at shitty jobs that he may well have put up with during the barren years after the war. I thought of the random thoughts that he must have had, the arguments, the late nights, hangovers, children, grandchildren.

I thought of all that and then I looked back at his bent tired frame again, the type of bloke who I would pass on the street and not even blink, and I felt what I can only describe as love and admiration, for him and all the old blokes and battleaxes who have managed to wade through all the shit that this world throws at you, and have survived.

They have survived and kept going, kept on going.

Since that day, I can honestly say that I've never looked at an old person the way I used to.

Red, I really liked what you had to say. I thought it was beautiful and empathetic and I will certainly dwell on it the next time I come across these feelings. I think my problem is mostly due to the fact that in my job I deal mainly with old people and they are really, really annoying. I used to hate ALL people when I worked in customer service. I also think that this is an irrational phobia and not really a logical approach to life as well. At the same time I don't really agree that hobbling around, whinging about the most insignificant crap and watching a lot of TV is surviving, I think its giving up and I pray that it never happens to me.

I am definitely touched when I meet the sort of elderly citizens that are made of nails, the ones that don't whine, the ones that empathize with younger people, the ones that have that quiet dignity about them that I envy but they are few and far between.

Working in customer service definitely lessens empathy. I did it and will never do it again, I hope.

I also understand where you are coming from Face and I still from time to time catch myself grinding my teeth when I am stuck behind some line of grannies at a checkout, for example.

But honestly, when I do, I try to remember that day and just give them a break. I mean, I whine a lot already, so god knows what kind of a pain in the ass I'll be when I'm really old. I'd like to think that I will be something like Jack Nickolson's character in As Good As It Gets, but who knows.

Old people make me depressed. I deal with them a lot at my job, especially in the morning, and I always try to brighten up their day by cracking jokes and giving them a free cup of coffee. I don't know why, I've always had a lot of respect for old people, and they've always made me depressed in the weirdest way. like, life is almost over for them. people are (a lot of times) rude to them. their bodies ache and their hearts are weak and their hair is thinning.

    :(

In the final analysis, the difference between youngsters, adults, and old people is but vanity. And yet, I think I might euthanize myself before I fall into a vegetative state because I think I'd rather die voluntarily. But I'm not sure yet; it may just be a silly youthful idea. :cheers2:

I used to feel that way. I used to have a lot of patience and time for older people. I felt sorry for them. Working in jobs where I see a lot of them sort of ruined that because few of them are willing to offer the same patience and empathy back. Maybe I expect too much of people. Maybe they do as well. Maybe thats the problem with people.
