Quick question: I have a couple of old lilac trees north of my house. They've been there as long as I've been on earth. I was wondering if it would be possible to take a cutting and make it root. Would I have to use some rooting hormone as well, or will it take care of itself? Thanks in advance
They take well from "root cuttings" as in, if you see sprouts near the base, or even a short way away (we'll not call them suckers, in this case!) you can take a square spade and separate some off, much like dividing a perennial. One that I did this with 20 years ago is now huge! I can provide pics of both the ancient parent and the 20 yr old, if desired. They're in full bloom here now.
