"Ok Ms. Different"

First I was atheist, childfree, bisexual, sex-positive etc and it was "Ok Ms. Different" you think you're so special you think you're so different from everyone else. Now I say "I'm just a black girl". They pester me, like no who are you what are you. I say I don't use labels. They say well you're black aren't you. I say yeah. They say well that a label. You're forced by this society to call yourself black. They hope I'm not free, they hope I'm in chains. They say that's who you are, black. What does that mean? What does it mean for black to be who you are? What culture am I in? I don't really have a culture. I'm just another 29 year old who goes about their daily routine. There's no culture I'm in.

Anyway, no matter how normal and non-threatening I try to make myself, people think I'm trying to be special and different and cool and better than everyone else. They won't rest until I conform. Then THAT's when I shouldn't care what people think. I should care what they think when I'm accused of being a whore or Ms. Different or a weirdo. But I shouldn't care what they think if I'm a sheep? Then why should I care in the first place??

I have been humiliated and harassed my whole life for being a ho, being different, now when I take pride in being a slut and being different now I think I'm special and better than everyone else and I must be forced to conform like I did in high school. No siree.

Be who you are, and be proud.

 

Yep, certain people are in a no-win situation as far as general society is concerned. Anyone who doesn't conform with the so-called "norms" of society are damned if they do, and damned if they don't. Not labelling yourself does not work, for the simple reason that society in general loves compartmentalising, labelling, and stereotyping people. So if you are different from "the norm", even if you don't want to label yourself, other people will still want to do that for you, so what can you do?

You can either betray yourself and live a dishonest life in order to conform with general society, or you can stay true to yourself, but must do so with the knowledge that elements of society will want to castigate you, whether you wish to apply an external label to yourself or not.

 

Every person has a need to be different, just like everyone else.

 

Stop. Don't try to please people. Obviously no matter which way you are, someone has something to say about it! So be ok with yourself! What's so great about the people who are judging you? They're not better than you and they don't have a right to tell you how to live your life.

 

That is so untrue... Then again, when you've been forced to be different in a way that you didn't want, being "normal" looks a very nice, attractive, and infinitely prefferable proposition to being different.

I actually have an inherent need to not be different, I just am, and there's nothing I can do about it, unfortunately.

And lots of people actually go against what comes naturally, in order to "fit in". Lots of people don't have a need to be different at all.

How come so many in our society frown upon people who are different to themselves?

And just how are you supposed to figure that out over the internet, unless the person is making it blatantly obvious that they're goofing around (which you didn't)? I don't do well when it comes to extra sensory perception, no, but then I seriously doubt you do either.
