Wait your saying the doors were trying to hard but you listen to Slayer?

I'm a big Slayer fan man, but their lyrics are usually laughable.

Kerry King and Tom Araya have said half of their lyrics are just things that sound good. No meaning whatsoever, they just want to sound like the heaviest band on the planet. Hell, the album "god hates us all" is only called that because Tom Araya said "God doesnt hate, but it's a cool fucking title".

So what makes you like Slayer but not The Doors? Afterall they are both just trying to fit in to some image the media has created.

Um, I really don't see how the two relate.
One of my favorite bands is the Pixies, who much like what you said about Kerry King and Tom Araya, liked to make songs with lyrics that just sounded cool. Sometimes their lyrics are more for enhancing the overall feeling of the music than anything else.
That's entirely different from the Doors. I do know of a song or two where he tried to do as you mention. But the overall work of his songs (many of their hits weren't written by Morrison) were supposed to be very meaningful and are (to my horror) boasted as being such.
It's completely different situations if you ask me.

    You said

And Slayer try too hard to sound tough and evil.

What isn't the same? The only thing that isn't the same is the music. Jim was more about that artsy sound but Kerry King just wants the sound of death.

No, I never said that. I don't think they try too hard at all. I think they do a good job of sounding like they want to sound.
I think Jim Morrison wanted to sound artsy, but instead sounds like he wants to sound like he's artsy.
Slayer wants to sound cool to the fans, and evil to the idiots that think metal is evil, I think they do that quite well, indeed.

PS - putting words into people's mouth isn't very nice, save that for when you're anchoring on Fox =D

good art doesnt NEED to be meticulously dissected (although it can be). it's visceral and is something greater than the sum of its parts.

No, I was thinking about the Slayer try too hard line
Are you saying it's your opinion that they try too hard?
Cause it's not my opinion, so then for me the Doors lyrical style and Slayer's don't compare.
I mean, if you think they try too hard, that's your own thing - but I think they do a fine job with their lyrics =)

If that were true they wouldn't have released God Hates Us All or Christ Illusion. Those albums are terribly bad and sound like they are trying to be as "hardcore" as todays new bands when in reality it made them sound like old men trying to keep up with todays music (which is mostly garbage).

God Hates Us All had some good stuff, I thought.
I haven't even gotten around to Christ Illusion yet, you don't recommend?
Just looked up Jihad, cause of the cool name, not impressed. =(
You're right, it does sound a bit like hardcore, it doesn't sound like they even tried.

    Even longer.

Slayer never wrote serious lyrics, they write about the same cliche things over and over again.

That's not a bad thing though, they are Slayer and that's what they are supposed to do. Although after Seasons in the Abyss it got really old really fast.

Slayer are a band that are just pure energy. Metallica's earlier work takes some decent skill to play. Kirk obviously isn't the best guitarist in the world but he wipes the floor with KFK or Jeff Hanneman any day.

Actually your right, there were 2 songs I liked off of God Hates Us All, disciple and exile are pretty good.

But Christ Illusion is just god awful. It's like the St.Anger of slayer albums lol.

Honestly I think Slayer are full of shit when they say the lyrics were always a joke. They were probably never Satanists, but I'm sure most bands with satanic lyrics aren't. they're just some old pussies who thought, 'oh noes teh ppl might not take us srsly if we admit we have some passion!!'

that's how I feel when I have to defend Metallica's early work to brain dead idiots who think Enter Sandman is what Metallica are all about.

But I always know I'm right so it doesnt matter :D

Sounds like it so far, I listened to Jihad and flipped through two songs.
I haven't been too metal-y lately, I still haven't checked out Metallica's newest work. Except Unforgiven III, which was on the radio one day, and was definitely better than Unforgiven II.

But this thread isn't very funny lately, so:

That's why I can't take their new stuff seriously.

They think it's cool to have this big tough macho "FUCK YOU" image but that doesn't work when your pushing 50.

At least Metallica slowly started crapping out. Slayer just full out went from "SLAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER" to "slayer".
