I have been reading some things about Risperdal. Mainly elderly people with altziemers (sp) who take Risperdal for treatment have experienced the inability to walk. Now I worry that when I get older my Risperdal may affect me this way. It is good to have warning ahead of time however. That may help. I have recently found a Schizophrenia forum, have not registered to it though. I read about the trouble speaking some Schizophrenics have. I'm not quite sure whether I have this problem or not. I think my medication helps greatly. I can string coherant thoughts together, something I can not do quite well when not on meds. Anybody have any adverse side effects with Risperdal... (my question mark won't work both shift keys are somehow screwy right now). I don't believe I have any major side effects with it. Or perhaps, I am just not very aware of them.
If you aren't aware of any side effects, don't worry about it. Sometimes the mind can manifest physical symptoms by the power of suggestion. I have many stories about large numbers of people feeling sick when they hear about food poisoning and it turned out that they were never exposed in the first place. I have also heard about a mix up w/ uppers and downers and half of the patients developed the physical symptoms of the medication they thought that they had taken, despite the fact they had taken the other medication. i take risperedal when i need it and i hate it. it messes with my periods big time i will often get three periods in a month. it also causes muscle ticks like seroquel. so if i notice thngs getting worse, i take it for a few weeks and when i am back on an even keel, i stop it. my docs are okay with this. i really understand where your coming from becausw Seroquel causes diabetes, cataracts and permanent ticks. seroquel works well for me i cannot take anything else. drugs such as mood stabilisers interfere with other drugs i take for other health problems i must admit risperedal doesn't cause weight gain and when i take it, it really helps there are other similar drugs on the market, maybe you could talk to your doc my illness doesn't involve paranoria,so i take different meds i would rather be happy and sane and suffer a few side effects. the meds have improved so much and will continue to do so in the future you have the right to change meds. i took zyprexa and within a couple of months was so fat because it fucks with your metabolism sp i am so vain that i stopped and went on other meds. i have been med free at times, but to have a happy life, i need them the other thing to try with meds is stuff like CBT and DBT and other mind exercises i hope this is of some value to you
Hello Hippiechick, Yes it is amazing what the human mind can do to the body.I've read about an elderly gentleman who cured himself of cancer with meditation. The onlyside effect with Risperdal I have noticed is dizzyness, however, only when I sit down or stand up too fast. I had extreme problems with Abilify. It felt as if I had waves going through my brain. This stange sensation in my brain stopped when I threw out my abilify on doctors orders. Hello Ava, I do not really want to changed medications as Risperdal has been the only one that has worked for me. Zyprexa didn't help me at all. I was still paranoid and having delusions while on it. Then I stopped taking it for awhile and I was fine but nervous as hell that I was nuts. I was a little paranoid but most of the delusions stopped.
i sorry i i gave you the wrong impression i thought you asked if anyone had comments and adverse problems on risperedal so i wrote yes i have i certainly was never saying don't take it. i think i was trying to convey that you have choices. i was all so saying that sometimes you have to put up with the side effects i do believe you have a choice regading meds which you can discuss with your doc i was using zyprexa as an example btw, word salad is when people get words and letters mixed up
Hello ava, You seem a little mad in your last post. Hope I did not offend you. I realize you were not telling me to change meds. I am aware it is an option though. And, yes I did want to know if anyone had some adverse effects. Thank you for sharing. I only mentioned stuff about Zyprexa because I felt like it. I didn't assume you were suggesting it. I'm not talking about getting a couple letters mixed up, I am talking about how some Schizophrenics omit words or make up words. Or have problems writing. I remember when I first had a psychotic episode I could not write anything logical and mostly used single words to describe how I felt. Not being able to write sentences. Again sorry if I offended you.
I took risperdal in small doses for my compulsions.... it made me lactate.... YEah... that was a bad side affect.

I have been on Risperidal for over 11 years. The main side effects I notice are sedation and weight gain, which I'm trying to combat with a better diet and more exercise. I find that when I am very physically and mentally active the side effects lessen, but then some of the symptoms can return, so for me it's a case of trying to get the balance right. A side effect of long-term use can be tardive dyskinesia (sp?) which can be irreversible, so I'm hoping I manage to dodge that one.
