UPDATE: Atlanta had 53 arrests last night when police moved in and cleared out the protest. They're now in court getting processed.

I love Atlanta and this makes me love Atlanta even more. I'm going to have to make my way there this weekend and show some support. Does anyone know where in Atlanta the occupation is taking place?

October 26, 2011 - In a strong show of force, Police move in to arrest Occupy Atlanta protesters resisting Mayor Kasim Reed's order to leave Woodruff Park. Among the arrested is State Senator Vincent Fort. Many protesters move out onto Peachtree Street, shouting and chanting as a large crowd of spectators gathers.

Occupy Atlanta Group to announce ‘reorganization'

"After the events of the last few days and the release of the First 52, Occupy Atlanta has captured growing support," the group said in a statement. "We understand that it is important for the movement to continue to address the broken political and economic system. It is also important that we continue to show a presence in the city of Atlanta and provide a space to reoccupy. Occupy Atlanta is committed to continuing this movement."

Several Atlanta police officers kept watch over the downtown park, which remained closed and barricaded early Thursday morning. Signs posted outside the park said that the park would reopen at 3 p.m. Thursday.

About 200 protesters met Thursday night in Centennial Olympic Park to discuss their next move. Then they moved on to set up camp at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.

Occupy Atlanta protesters found a new home to set up camp Thursday night( 10/27/11). They spent the night behind the Martin Luther King Jr. visitor center in northeast Atlanta.

“Why there? Because we are there in the shadow of the Civil Rights Movement,”

The protesters made good on a promise to pack up and leave Friday morning, “out of respect for this place and out of respect for the comprise we made with authorities,”

During the day, demonstrators have been marching to various sites. On Thursday, they marched to the Peachtree Pine Homeless Shelter, where they rallied against the possible foreclosure of the site. Gondolfi said they will be on the move from now on, staying in one spot for no more than a night or so.

“This occupation is not tied with one spot or park. It's tied to one heartbeat,” demonstrator Brittany Gondolfi said.

Occupy Atlanta establishes home base -- in homeless shelter

Nearly a week after the city forced them out of Woodruff Park, members of the Occupy Atlanta group have moved into a new base of operations: the Task Force for the Homeless shelter on Peachtree and Pine Streets.

"We're just trying to organize a little better," said member Scott Brown. The move might be temporary, at best. The shelter is in danger of being shut down by the city, because of unpaid utility bills. Occupy Atlanta said that's one of the reasons why they moved in, with permission from the shelter.

"We're trying to keep it open," said Brown. He said they plan on helping with painting and other restoration projects at the shelter, while they use it.

Though the Occupy Atlanta website shows they have demonstrations planned through November, the question of what their message is still carries a murky answer.

"We haven't had a main message so far," said Brown, before being corrected by a fellow member. "That's not true," they said to him during his answer, to which he responded, "why is that not true? Oh yeah, corrupt political system. I don't see how it's going to change too much."

The Occupy Atlanta movement claims it has roughly 1,000 members, full and part time, about a quarter of which are homeless, according to one organizer.

Atlanta Police came to evict the Occupy Atlanta protesters from Woodruff Park at 11:00 p.m. Protesters moved onto the streets and sidewalks and were met by uniformed police carrying plastic handcuffs, and motorcycle police, which were backed by officers in riot gear — face plates, body armor and long nightsticks — and mounted police. They brought out a prison bus and the Atlanta Fire Department.

An Atlanta PD motorcycle officer charged into protester with his bike, knocking down 4, then arrested the one who took the brunt of the hit.

In total only about 10 people were arrested for all this show.

"A large Atlanta police force including motorcycles, mounted police, officers on foot, a SWAT team in riot gear and a helicopter moved in aggressively and faced off with the marchers," protest organizers said in a statement. "Peace was maintained until a policeman on a motorcycle accelerated into a demonstrator."

The Atlanta PD statement said a person (not the person originally hit with the motorcycle) accused of assaulting a motorcycle officer on patrol was arrested and charged with felony charges of aggravated assault and obstruction.

On Occupy Atlanta's facebook the man who was hit by the motorcycle posted this statement:

The officer was making his way through the crowd. He wasn't traveling at a high rate of speed. He didn't hit anyone but me. When I saw him approaching I purposefully obstructed his path and forced him to stop in front of me. He told me to move, but he did not give me a chance to do so. As you saw, he tried to still ride his vehicle with me on the front of it.
