Thoughts? That's... fuckin' awesome. When Obama came to Canada we gave him an iPod with 100 Canadian songs on it. Everyone in the country was able to vote on which songs to put on the iPod and he got a pretty sweet playlist with some underground stuff and table folk songs. Sorry, what is this thread about exactly? Our views on what Obama can or cannot give away as a personal gift? Wouldn't that infringe on his personal freedoms if we were all to decide for him?
I hear Obama is a big fan of the HBO series "The Wire" and Omar is his favourite character. Great show.
it was funny. and the bust was on loan anyway. it was supposed to go back. it's not the best gift for sure. brown's not a huge movie fan. but wth?
Yes sir he presented Prime Minister Brown a 25 DVD set of "Classic American Movies". Well.. thanks to King George and Darth Cheney... everything in America is .... MADE IN CHINA ... guess he could of given some foreclosed homes
Right now, considering that England is our BEST Ally, i would have expected some thought to be put into any gifts to their Leader, something much like the gifts given ~ of historical value to BOTH countries, and something that shows the newest coat of mortar on the bricks that hold our two countries together, not some manure-packed straw to just patch up the little cracks. (NOTHING against manure-packed straw huts, for those of you living in them, or soon to be...) It SPOTLIGHTED a lack of couth, manners, and thoughtfulness, and was little more than a spitwad in the PM's face, imho. AND THEY'RE OUR FRIENDS!!! (well, for now...) It's like, "Oh, wow, the PM is coming over, and i don't have anything to give him! WAIT! Hold everything! Where's that stupid movie collection Mitchy gave me for Christmas? Yeah! THERE we go! Dust this outer cellophane off a little ~ just like new!" Pathetic. Truly pathetic. Now, THAT, i'm ashamed of: for the PM (how do GRACIOUSLY accept such a tasteless gift???); for Obama (you can't be clowning around like that in THIS job, pal); for all American people, that would never dream of doing such a thing, let alone to someone as esteemed as the PM!; for all of us that, like it or not, are Stuck Like Chuck with this O-Bozo in the White House; for those of us that were unable to convince others that, while "The Plan" remains the same, the actor's "Delivery" really DOES matter; and especially for those of y'all whom were so taken in by this dude. Believe it or not, a lot of us are still Idealists, at heart, and it's heartbreaking to see it so throughly QUASHED by such a cowardly, lying, cheating, despicable person as Obama. Betrayal, in ALL forms, hurts exactly the same ~ it's just the amplitude that changes. Sad, but true. p.s. Air*? Maybe that's why i've been on a tear with you, lately. Now, i really DO have something to be ashamed of my country about. (* Sorry ~ i really likeee it, and it IS sort of funny, the WHOLE thing, which i promise to NEVER use, again, so help me, God! And which i will edit out of my post, if you'd like? Everyone can just think i'm a dumbass, that can't tell a typo from a toucan! Or i could just grow up, and knock it off... bummer Your choice? :sifone
I think its great. They are already rich and have everything anyway. Plus its less money for the tax payers.
The motion picture industry of the US is an important part of our economy. And even during the depression people were still attending movie theatres. I think considering the economic climate of the world it was a thoughtful and appropriate gift. Not a classic antique type symbol for sure, but perhaps something your Prime Minister could learn from. The fact that the mass production of the medium and a lot of the technical side of the industry has been outsourced could also be instructional to foreign countries seeking to rebuild from a financial collapse.
I find complaining about gifts to be a larger social gaffe. Something my mother taught me at a young age. One should graciously accept anything given them without complaint, for nothing in this life is guarranteed. Would you have had us dismantle an artifact of our history to make a pencil holder out of it for a visiting dignitary? Did the British people want a pencil holder made out of some of the twisted metal from the Twin Towers? An umbrella stand out of a used shell from Shock and Awe? Perhaps a paperweight from a piece of the Liberty Bell? Might the nose from Sadaam Hussein's statue have been acceptable? Focussing on the fact that Obama is black by giving a slavery related gift to me is just a little questionable.
Focussing on the fact that Obama is black by giving a slavery related gift to me is just a little questionable A bit tacky
I voted for my president because he was an educated thinking man not because he was half black. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1159344/Americas-salute-Gordon-Brown-new-deal.html Mr. Brown is a market elitist: Hard to consume when you don't have a job.
oh, let it go and don't bring the court jester limbaugh into it. he committed a faux pas. people, being people and thus gossipy and excited to cannibalize anyone famous, got all hissy about it. an amatuer mistake, not one likely to be made again.
I don't see Obama's gift as an amatuer mistake. I don't want him dismantling historic artifacts to make gifts for foreign dignitaries The bust of Churchill was on loan to Bush not Obama we gave it back, would you rather we had kept it? If you want to gift our president don't stoop to playing the racist card. Most of us here in the US weren't even aware of the gifts. Now we are. Who's fault is that? What did you want a new Ford or Chevy?
What we've ended up with as a gift from Gordon Brown is Tony Blair as a peace envoy in the Middle East. How much peace have you seen?
