I guess Obama wants to put more troops in Afghanistan now, maybe double to 60,000.

Foolish invasion to a quagmire? or maybe ah... conspiracy to invade Pakistan by the back door?

What are peoples opinion on this? Afghanistan the grave yard of invading nations..

The reason why they are doubling the forces, is because Afghanistan has an election this year, in April. But Karzai doesn't leave until May 22nd. They need a lot of troops to protect polling stations from blowing up, and prevent candidates from going missing.

Yeah, but they'll tell you anything to justify sending more troops. Why should you believe them?

I would agree if you had said they need more troops to protect the poppy fields.

These were just skimmed off of a new search today.

29 January 2009-More NATO Troops To Afghanistan-
President Barack Obama has said the U.S. is committed to allocating more resources to winning the war against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan. According to U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the U.S. may send 2 more brigades to Afghanistan by late spring and a third brigade by mid-summer
    http://www.voanews.com/uspolicy/2009-01-29-voa1.cfm

By DESMOND BUTLER – 1 day ago-President Barack Obama already is testing whether Europe will match its enthusiastic words about his administration with concrete actions. After seeking help shutting the Guantanamo Bay prison, Obama now has a potentially more contentious request: He wants more European troops fighting in Afghanistan.

"President Barack Obama has said the U.S. is committed to allocating more resources to winning the war against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan."

They have been complaining for years that they can’t get to al-Qaida and the Taliban because of open borders in Pakistan tribal areas and protection from Pakistan.
Call me suspicious but seems like a small build up leading to other goals, like maybe Pakistan or at least Pakistan tribal areas?

But will Pakistan let the U.S. and NATO march on the tribal areas without a full on war?

No. They need to send in more troops so that delivering "democracy" to the Afghan people does not appear to be a total and complete failure.

They need to send in more troops, because Karzai's popularity has been steadily decreasing and the chance of violent outbreaks is high.

No one in the Western World needs to hear about violence and bloodshed in Afghanistan during an election.

    Believe them now?

Rat, Not sure they are actually protecting the poppy fields, altho it stands to reason that SOME of them (those being grown for the CIA?) are being helped along. The rest, I figure they have simply been told to look the other way. After all, opiates and heroin are GREAT for keeping a certain segment of the population controlled and the prison industry happily growing... AND once all those soldiers have gotten to study poppy farming, they can come back to the states, join the police force, and now that they know what to look for they can start arresting people for growing a bit of organic opium for their personal use.

They also destroy poppy fields from time to time. After a good year they get a surplus of crude heroin and they need to impose the “war on drugs” to diminish surplus supply to keep the price inflated.

I think 1999 or 2000 was the last time they had big year and a heroin surplus so they made the Taliban shut down peoples fields for a year until surplus supplies were used up, then poppies as normal.

Nice how they make thousands of people starve and be imprisoned just to keep the price of contraband inflated.

    Not even close.

The notion (read: myth) of them destroying the poppy fields is nothing more than propaganda and window dressing. Believe the lies at your own peril. The opium trade in Afghanistan is controlled by the CIA.

The biggest spike in Afghanistan opium production occurred not long after the US invaded in 2001. Put the pieces together, it's not rocket science.

I’m not debating the CIA is running the opium production and also the heroin importation. They are.

But they also paid the Talbain to destroy crops and make it illegal around 2000 when they had to much surplus of processed opium and the market was being flooded and the price of herion was droping to an all time low.
So the Taiban got some suitcases of money and went and shut down a large amount of opium production for that year heroin prices went back up to normal then next year opium production was business normal.

It was back before the war so it would be hard to find traces of the stories on the internet but it is well documented in Talbain history.

^Interesting read I missed that one when it came out.
Sounds like someone is stockpiling for an expected bad growing season/war.

Big move on the Afghanistan chessboard by Russia, it will be interesting to see what will play out from this.

Kyrgyz closure of US base 'final'

The move to shut the base comes at a critical moment for the US
Kyrgyzstan says its decision to close a US base that serves as a vital supply route for US and Nato operations in Afghanistan is "final".

Ghee I wonder if it is a.. conspiracy.. so the U.S. and NATO can’t fuel planes and supply troops. lol

NATO: Members May Use Iran for Easier Routes to Afghanistan

KABUL — NATO would not oppose individual member nations making deals with Iran to supply their forces in Afghanistan as an alternative to using increasingly risky routes from Pakistan, the alliance’s top military commander said Monday.

A good source of info on Afghani opium and heroin production: Unholy Wars by John K. Cooley

Also an excellent source of info on the roots of covert Middle Eastern warfare, shadow armies, shadow banking and weapon suppliers.
The roots of the “War on Terror”

It was written in 98-99 before the Tailban enforced a ban on poppy production.

"It was "complete with well planned routes and a whole network of dozens of factories" to process opium into its morphine base and heroin. "Western experts" supervised creation of the labs in camp of Gulbuddin Hikmatyar's group.
However, "the real King of Heroin is considered to be Gilani who had far suppressed Hikmatyar in narco- business and controls the overwhelming majority of the operations
of the opium Mafia." The CIA was working closely with both Hikmatyar and Gilani."

Obama orders more troops to Afghanistan
"The deployment, to total 17,000 soldiers and Marines, will double the number of U.S. combat brigades at a time of tension with Afghanistan's weak government over civilian casualties."
    LINK

New route links Afghanistan to sea, via Iran
"A new land route has just opened linking Afghanistan to the southern seaports of its next-door neighbor, Iran - and that could be the opening the new administration needs to forge a diplomatic relationship with a regional power the United States has, with rare exception, viewed as the Middle East bogeyman."

^^Look at all the Oil possibilities.

That’s change you can believe in..

U.S. Military to Accept Temporary Immigrants
"For the first time since Vietnam, the U.S. armed forces will begin recruiting immigrants in America on temporary visas. In return for their service, the recruits will be fast-tracked to citizenship in a process that could take less than six months."
    LINK

Now we can get immigrants to go to war a boost troops with out a draft.

With the massive amounts of Private contractors in Iraq we can pull out official troops soon and still control a country the size of Iraq without U.S. accountability.

Wow tons of new innovate war strategies coming out of the Obama office.
This just might be a great summer for U.S. military expansion so soon in the new administration.

That’s change you can believe in..

    Let the killing begin.
