The Obama Adminstration is planning to once again allow land to be designated as wilderness areas. Under former president Bush, the government refused to allow new areas to come under wilderness protection, opening them to development.

This is a victory for Obama and the enviromentalists.

One house of congress isn't the executive branch, or even all of congress for that matter.

It's a sad thing when protecting the earth becomes such a political football.

This was exactly why President Clinton designated a large number of new BLM-administered national monuments in the last days of his presidency. It's much more difficult to rescind a national monument than wilderness designation.

Clinton was reviled in the western states because of it, but it was one of the best things he ever did.

    The Mystery of Iniquity...
How someone like Bush can do so much harm and is self-deluded into thinking that he is doing good. Even if you are conservative, it is not a logical inconsistency to want to conserve natural resources and places of beauty. (There are other problems with conservative doctrine, so I am not advocating it). The problem is that true conservatives got bought out years ago by corporate types who don't love the Earth, don't love the American people, are just in it for the money.

Obama is not perfect, but people who care about the Earth have some hope that he will listen to lobbyists from Sierra Club and groups like that. I just hope that he does not lose perspective from constant onslaught of industrial lobbyists.

Is this going to cover the area of outstanding beauty and interesting ecology in Aberdeenshire that Donald Trump just bought and is planning on turning into a golf course? The scottish government appear to be happy to let him away with this, are the American government going to?

I don't know about Obama but I know that Clinton has already his own personal locker space reserved for this.

You want America to tell Scotland that they can't build a golf course?
I guess we could boycott Scottish products, but what else can foreigners do about it?

If you Brits are having such a bad financial crisis, why not just sell off your National parks to the highest bidders? Then they can develop them into Disneyworld with rides, crappy condos, shopping malls and swimming pools.

This is where our countries are both heading if we don't stop the corporations from raping nature.

There is room for discussion regarding wilderness designation or whether logging could be allowed in a multiple use scenario, but British forest land would be lost forever if it is sold to private investors. In the crowded UK, what economic incentive does a property owner have to leave the land undeveloped? None, I think.

I am also opposed to treating forests as a tree farm. Without a diverse forest, the ecology is ruined. But a forest rich with species can endure limited harvesting of timber and still sustain wildlife.

However, some forests are too unique to make logging an acceptable use. The British public must choose, guided by ecologists and other naturalists.
