President Barack Obama's comment about his bowling score being "like the Special Olympics or something" is drawing criticism.

During the president's appearance on " The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," the two joked about the White House bowling alley.

According to a transcript from NBC, the back-and-forth bantering about bowling is as follows:

Leno: "Now, are they going to put a basketball -- I imagine the bowling alley has been just burned and closed down."
Obama: "No, no. I've been practicing bowling."
Leno: "Really? Really?"
Obama: "I bowled a 129 -- "
(Laughter.)
"-- which -- I have -- "
Leno: "Oh, no, that's very good. Yeah. No, that's very good for a -- "
Obama "It was like Special Olympics or something."
(Laughter.)
Leno: "No, that's very good."
Obama: "No, listen, I'm making progress on the bowling. Yeah."

The White House issued a statement Thursday night that the president's comments about his own bowling was in now way intended to disparage the Special Olympics.

"The president made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics. He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world."

I don't think so, presidents are human too and it sounds like a no pun intended joke to me. If you're offended by a remark like that you truly have a problem in this world I guess.

 

I poke fun of the Special Olympics all the time. Big Deal. Clearly, you've never been a Special Olympics event if you cannot find the humor.

 

if bush,limbaugh or any other right winger would have made the same comment the attention this is getting would pale in comparison..

It amazes me the double standards that people employ for somebody they like.

Now, personally, I don't give a fuck what the man says. Everybody, and I mean everybody, in this world at one time or other says something that offends somebody, sometimes even things that should not have been said.

I find it quite strange that a lot of the posters on here seem to find it acceptable that he has belittled the physically and mentally disabled, even if only in jest.

I wonder if the comment poked fun at white people's attempts at basketball, or made fun of some minority(muslims, mexicans, asians) would this be taken as lightly?

I'm not a fan and I wouldn't be offended at all if he made fun of a minority/subculture/whatever I'm in. It only changes if it was ment as some kind of insult or made fun of them or if he got real personal about them/someone, but in this case he mentioned the special olympics on it's own skills right. Why take offense of that? And perhaps the people of the special olympics didn't even take offense, or are one of the posters in here active at the SO?
