    Fare history[edit]
Below are the fares charged for single boardings on the transit lines and predecessors of the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA). Different combinations of transfer privileges and the abolition of double fares to the Rockaways have altered these fares from time to time. Since 1997, massively increased transfer privileges and pass discounts have lowered the average real fare significantly. According to MTA figures, only 2.1% of rides are single-ride fares.[31]

    Its out of control -
-when I come up to visit the old neighborhood in the Bronx, ,its 13 bucks for the Lincoln Tunnel /GW Bridge or the Holland- -tappen zee>(white plains and up to Ct) holding at 5 bucks
Back when I started driving , tolls were $.50 a pop(each way). Technically, they increased to one dollar in 1970, but that’s a little misleading, as 1970 was when tolls were no longer charged in each direction.

    Subway $$ is outrageous -
check out the Hudson river tolls >
    1970-1974- 1.00
    1975 -1980 $1.50
    1980 -1987 $2
    1987 – 1991 $3
    1991 – 2001 $4
    2001 – 2008 $6
    2008 – 2011 $8
some how between 2011- and today (2014) - they made ALL crossings 13 freaking dollars to get into the city from NJ- unless you park in Jersey City/Hoboken and take the Ferry-or that path train. I think its cheap at least not too bad..but who wants to leave thier car and get on a Ferry??

It's interesting...once your in this metropolice it's extremely expensive to get out of the city (or in). But why would you need to leave the city...it has everything you need and even more?

Career and Family kinda dictated where I wound up -(along with my financial capabilities....
Maybe someday..we,ll sell this place..and get that brownstone across from Washington Sq- and Ill live out my old age feeding the pidgins while writing that great American novel- -:)--

Generally, working class wages in the US have not risen to match inflation over the last 30-40 years.

I don't know about New York but in Boston it's $70.00 dollars per month which gives you unlimited use of the Subway and local bus routes (not including the commuter rail lines)

This is why I buy an unlimited card every month (I also live in NYC). I pay $112 to ride the train and bus as many times as I like in the month. So much more convenient than spending 2.50 to get to work and 2.50 to get home, then what if I want to go somewhere after work? I have to ride the train again. It gets expensive. Unlimited metro cards are the way to go, no doubt about it.

I consider this a bargain. Before moving to new york, I lived in San Diego. I drove a bmw, and paid over $800 a month just to have the car then throw in gas prices. Total travel expense around $1000/$1100 per month was just painful for me. Now, I pocket that cash instead.

I was just saying the other day, to a friend, that the NYCMTA is raking it in on fares alone.

At my last job, I purchased advertising on the train routes. I designed a subway ad for our office and had it run for a month. The package placed 1000 ads on the 3000 trains, one on every car number ending in 6 or 8. Total cost, $38,000.00 for exposure to 6 million train riders daily.

    Raking it in.

Ya $13 is expensive. My coworker takes a ferry to and from work every day, she lives in West NY. I would never commute to the city from Jersey. Thats just ridiculous, too expensive and difficult to get into the city.

Take the train, then get on a bus then back on the train...free transfers it usually works I can get all over the city with $2.50 if I'm smart about it.

There's always delays on the trains they usuall only last around 30 seconds but they can add up to several minutes sometimes.

And when da fuck are we gonna get wifi on da trains? I think it's about time...this is NYC after all...I hope they have it within a year but I'm most def not making any bets on dat;)

I met two hotties on the 2..den we got on the 1 at 96 back to da heights ( my hood)
