my husband's grandfather has been a vegetarian for about 16 years now. and he just had a quadruple bypass surgery due to a near heart attack. now this is the part that will make you roll your eyes at the misunderstanding of some people. he's assuming that his heart troubles are completely due to the meat he ate prior to going veg, COMPLETELY disregarding all the non-meat GARBAGE he's been consuming since then. just because it's not meat doesn't mean it's healthier, okay? so, anyway, instead of taking a hard look at all the junk food he's been consuming (sugary snacks, potato chips and just plain bad stuff), he's going to ignore his bad habits and keep eating garbage. so what does everyone who knows nothing about his true diet except that he's a veg think now? that vegetarianism is no better for you that eating beef or pork 3 times a day, either way you're doomed.
aww so he's giving vegetarianism a bad name... well i really hope he sees the error of his thinking and starts to eat better. actually, this reminds me of a special i saw a week ago about the "half-ton man" (that's 1000 lbs for anybody who might not know) anyway, he had to go to the hospital unless he was goign to die in his bed that he had been lying in for like 10 yrs. really sad.. but anyway, he went back home after losing so much weight and his wife was cooking for him telling the interviewers that they're trying to watch his calorie intake now and the interviewer asked how many calories were in the meal of fried eggs she was making and she said, "i have no idea." now that's love. i'm cynical today. and i felt i had to start eating better when i became veg. and i'm surprised more ppl don't...
yeah. it's one of those things where you can really see how thickheaded someone is, seeing only what they want to see in a given situation. and you can tell them over and over again, but they just kinda blink at you and completely ignore you.
I was asked a couple times by other students at university why one writer on the newspaper staff was fat if he was vegetarian. Since I've seen him eat six candy bars on a deadline night, I thought for a second (I had to TRY to be nice) and said, well, he thinks Twinkies are vegetarian. I say you should have to eat vegetables to call yourself veg...and french fries don't count. Neither does the castup, Ronnie.
your heart and blood flow can still get clogged if your not vegan... cholesterol+saturated fat is in all animal products without any fiber and junk food has no good fiber...so it takes lots of antioxidants to fix that your heart back up again i imagine. and him eating meat years ago very well could have had an effect on it if hes only been eatin junk food. meat can stay in your system for up to 15 years... how's that for giving you a headache?????
since you are what you eat, that doesn't surprise me. however, when he was an omni and a very healthy man with glowing health checkups for his entire life, including heart exams right after his father died, i'd lay odds that his current condition is primarily due to his post "vegetarian" junk food habit.
Most vegetarians eat healthy in general. Just because your relative ate junk food doesn't make vegetarianism unhealthy. Stop trying to bash it. You tend to do that a lot.
ophelia, you need to learn to read and examine context clues. show me bashing vegetarianism...quit being so over-defensive. i stated a case where a perfectly healhty man missed the point entirely. he was in perfect health, then quit meat but loaded up on garbage. now people in the family who understand nothing about the entire concept of vegetarianism think to themselves "haha! vegetarianism doesn't help!" completely ignoring the fact that this man has been eating potato chips, gross greasy shit and all that. if you need, i can draw you a picture...
well, you know, you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find me bashing vegetarianism as a dietary choice, but she gets ahead of herself.
