Not to forget a national socialist country ruled by a complete idiot, who, on top of his contraictory behvaviour promises every Greek citizen at least a thousand euroes he cannot afford to give to all of them.

So my question is why do the Greeks believe in their Greek socialist leader, when it is so obvious he is just a crook who is taking advantage of the desperation of his citizens and is about as much a socialist as Charles Manson.

If a group of people feels screwed enough there comes a point they mainly care about changing/stopping that. It doesnt have to make the country or people national socialistic necessarily (not even if they get a coalition with nat socialistic tendencies), and i dont think it counts for the greeks in general.

I'm noticing leftists joining up with right wingers more often now.

It's a result of the status quo having no solutions to the problems.

    Why?

Because the rich keep getting richer and there's nothing to stop them.

European austerity has been proven to be a huge failure for the most part.

If you understand modern capitalism, you will realize that these bailouts allow banks to print up tons more money out of thin air.

And with the EU going to print up another TRILLION+ EUROS. Things could get dicey.

Same thing happened b4 as you mentioned in Germany. Better get your wheelbarrows ready to hold the Euros to buy a loaf of bread... ;)

IMO, it's not the socialists or the right wingers who are making big hay over this. It's the COMMUNISTS all over Europe coming out of the woodwork.

When people are desperate enough they will believe anything. Hitler proved that point in 1933. Lenin did a similar thing in the east. Heck, even George W. got enough consensus to invade Iraq.

Europe is getting rifer with nationalists, ultra-nationalists and whatever other right wing people there may be by the day. Between the sliding economy and the seemingly ever present terrorist threats they're have a field day.

And whoever shouts loudest is right ....

So what your basically saying is that people never learn from history, period. I'm seriously getting that impression.

Yeah they do. Then it becomes yesterday's news and they forget. Repeat ad infinitum.

A lot of people do not study or have extensive knowledge of history (except in generalities), so yes, those people do not learn from history (as they did not learn history :p). Other people do though.

I'm not so sure that it's a matter of learning from history alone. If I light a blow torch on your ass, you're going to jump even if you're on the edge of a cliff.

Of course, it is not just a lack of learning from history!

So your basically saying people who support extremist parties cannot be held responsible for their actions, because they are all predetermined.

It is the situation they are in and the choices they have. The majority voted for that socialist party, I am not sure they (the voters) can be held responsible for every action that socialist party will now take (like forming a coalition with rightwing nationalists). You think otherwise, rak?

No, that is purely your inference.

In my original post, I said
Another way of putting it would be that as desperation increases, the tendancy to make thoughtful and responsible choices decreases. I never said that they couldn't be held responsible.

First of all how can anyone believe a socialist who promises to give his citizens money he does not have? Secondly you do not exactly hear people within or outside of Greece exactly complaining about that odd and uneccessary coalition. Even within this so called Hip forum I hardly hear a word of disapproval about that coalition. It's like nobody even cares about it.

Are you in Europe? I hear lots of negative commentary about it. Most people here in the Netherlands seem to mainly care about getting the money back, and the chances on that aren't really increasing with this coalition :p

Excellent point, quite similar to the dilemma voters are provided by the major parties each election.

Yes, I am, and the fact that they want their money back is the result that money was loned to Greece, because you do tend to give the money back that you have lended, hence the term loan, though Social Democrats in Vienna are very friendly towards Greece, and it is ironically right-wing conservatives in Vienna who oppose this friendly course, though they do this for financial reasons and not for moral ones, which shocks me.

Austerity has destroyed the Greek economy while at the same time dramatically increased their debt despite a cut in spending and a raise in taxes.

I think Germany and the European creditors are after Greek assets. Greece should exit the Eurozone imo.
