this may be the complete oppposite forum to be putting this in but i was wondering if any of you knew of any options for people who really dont want to go to college- and what your opinions are on it- my parents and teachers tell me you have to have a college education to do anything- but im just not interested in school- i dont know if im lazy or i just dont care- but its the last environment i want to be in- are there any jobs i could get w/o a degree?
You definately don't have to go to college and I totally understand where you are coming from not wanting too. There are lots of things you can do without a college degree but it helps to know what you want to do and what you're interested in.
well i wanted to be a fashion designer and go to school in savannah- but they are one of the hardest art schools to get into and my gpa is about a 1.56 so i would need a miracle. i just dont want to go to college the idea aggravates me to no end- i would love to travel, etc. but obviously the 60's are over, and my parents wont supply me with the money to do that until after ive graduated- its like im not meeting their expectations- but theirs nothing i can do ab it if school just sint my thing you know?
a little off the subject, but you sounded like me a couple months ago (with the exception of my parents would never give me money like that)
Yeah the art school in savannah is really nice, I live very close to that area. Anyway don't you have a little time to get your gpa up and also see if they have a program where you could still attend and take remedial classes that will help get your gpa up. Or you could find a partner and open up your own mini clothing boutique. I have a friend who did the exact same thing and she didn't go to college and they make lots of the clothes themselves.
What exactly don't you like about college? A decent college is a great place, lots of intelligent and creative people, nothing like highschool. And in some sense, your parents are correct. A degree or diploma will help you find a job you enjoy and will reduce your chances of ending up working in walmart (not that you can't get a decent job without an education, but it's harder).
It's really hard to get a decent job without college. Basically, to get a job better than a burger flipper, you almost have to go to college. It can be done without it, but I know my dad has 30 years of experience in business, has been a senior project manager and vice president of various companies, but still hasn't been able to find a job in 2 years because he doesn't have college. Going to college saves you alot of trouble later on.
i been to college 5 times. still havent graduated though. i know some kids who go to savannah college of art and design, i dotn think youre missin much. school only teaches conformity, artists need to be free thinkers. it is hard to find work without a college degree, but its hard with one too. who knows, i just sell coffee all day.
I think it's unfair to say ALL schools only teach comformity. A good professor provides a setting for students to discuss and explore beyond the textbook. When universities were first invented, it was said that the point of the church was lecture and the university was discussion. A good professor will lecture less than half the time. Look into literature and art classes. Get your GPA up in a community college after high school. (You'll get a lot of younger teachers with really far out ideas.) Then, if you're still interested in the art school, you can see about transferring.
think of what you want to do and what makes you happy, and see if you need a college degree for it. if making pizza for minimum wage makes you happy, then dont go to college
Whats so important that you cant take at least two or four years??? intrested or not, your gonna live to regret your past decisions and unless your really motivated,(doesnt look like it) have fun working at K-Mart
Hey, my suggestion to you...is to take a little bit of time off from high school, (make sure you graduate) then just take it slow(but not too slow) first get a job that is decent and pays enough to please your parents, then spend alot of time wandering around, take some road trips, and try new experiences. then if you feel it necessary enroll into a Coumminty College, take a few classes that seem intersting to you, then if you feel it necessary take the classes you need to get to a college of your choice with (there are other colleges than that one art college that will suit you fine) But just don't give up, keep on searching and you eventaully will hear life calling to you, sure it seems scary now because you are starting to wake up from the dream, but once you see how things really are, and who you really are, it all gets better. Best of Luck to you, Peace
Stay in school, get good grades, or at least push yourself to the max. Then, when you have your degree, the credentials, the legitimacy, tell the world to f**k off. So, my view is, get the degree and work your way up, only to subvert the world and your enemies in the end. Knowledge is power. You can be an autodidact (someone who is self-taught), but if you will go through the trouble to learn on your own, you might as well do it with the guidance of professionals and the social benefits that come with it. I too graduated from high school with a low GPA, but I am almost done with college with a good GPA. Who knows, the knowledge, in some unforeseeable way, may prove useful.
When I think of people who didn't need to go to college and still got jobs that pay well, I think of plumbers and carpenters. I've got an MA, and they make much more than I do. You can do OK without college if you've got incredible talent, a good plan, and you're willing to work very, very, very hard. What I learned in college was rarely stuff I picked up in a classroom. It was the people. If you go to college, go to a school where people are curious about the world and interested in all sorts of different things and are just different enough from you that you can learn about yourself and the world by being around them.
Those school are fine, trade schools, plus since they are catered to your particular desire you don't have to take as many, if any, course that you don't want to. It's the people who are more in a humanities or scietific field (AKA... stuff you learn in school) or offshoots of those that do benefit from the college enviorment.
This is true, but a college degree gives you more options in life. When you get older and decide for a career change, having a degree will make your resume look better, and in many jobs it will be easier to get the promotion. Who wants to be a plumber anyway?
I don't want to be a plumber and LSDSeeker doesn't want to be a plumber. On the other hand, I'm not going to criticize anyone who does want to be a plumber--especially when my pipes are clogged and I have to pay a few hundred dollars to get them fixed. Some people don't want to go to college, and many of them would be wasting their time and money to go. The real question is "What do you want to do in life, and is college necessary or helpful to getting to do it?"
Not going to college does not mean you're going to be flipping burgers for the rest of your life. I have a friend who is a welder. He's 19 and makes more money than most adults who went to college get. People want to push college on people like it's the only option in exsistance. The only way to get a decent job. It's not. Neither of my parents finished college, my dad worked at IBM for 23 years making 100 thousand dollars a year. Some people do not belong in college. That doesn't mean they're going to be cleaning toilets for the rest of their lives. Get over yourself and stop pretending that your way is the only way.
