My g/f's dad is getting us Norton Anti-virus for Christmas. Is this the best? What would be the one to get?
its the only 1 i'd ever use some people preffer others..but in my opinion nortons always been the best
Norton antivirus I wouldnt touch it with a bargepole ! Its bulky, overweight self promoting adware. You will find that once its on your computer its difficult to get rid of, will halt your attempts to run the computer with inane questions about what you want to do with viruses - hardly spots a virus - and is actually the worst antivirus product I've ever used. To uninstall it you need special software from nortons site and then it will say it cant do it ! YOU MUST BELIEVE ME or at least type into google "norton antivirus sucks" and see for yourself just how many complainants there are - millions of them if you dont believe me read this ! Before considering noton try macafee, f-prot, bit defender If I didnt post this statement I'd be guilty of negligence I'm sure ! anyone who says norton is good is using the version that came with their computer and hasnt tried anything else I once tested 3 identical machines - interfaced them identically to the net but each had different antivirus - i hit exactly the same website and exactly the same downloads from dodgy sites - norton was abysmal Youd be better off buying either f-prot or bit defender
hahaha thats commical at best i've always used norton on every machine ive ever used, its cauhght every single virus i ever had, only had 1 false alert in 15 years and that was fixed the next day the few times i found unknown viruses, they were added tothe virus definitions and sa fix released within hours ive only had problems uninstalling when an install was curripted antd theyre uninstall thing worked perfectly ive never had a single problem and it in no way sup[ports addware..what a joke..norton also removes all adware and spyware and hack tools and is the best protection availible i tried mcafee..& was never ever able to get it to even update the virus definitions, making it virtualy useless & fprot is ok, but still doezxnt offer the level of protection norton does
norton anything sucks ass bad..... i use a program called AVg and it works realloy good and best of all its free and no adware crap small enoughf program ( a friend of mine told me to get and hes a computer tech dude with his own bussiness) NORTON BLows and it is very hard to get rid of completely u gotta download a thing called anti norton and it will remove all norton CRAP from yuor system and allow to work better cause ive had norton and i regert ever having it (especaily (SP) if your buying it it aint worth it if u download for free
I like Norton. I just got the 2007 edition. It has always been very good at catching viruses, and I never got any ads.
correction (surely) its caught every virus you knew you had - thats the point - I assure you - as security is what I'm best at - Norton is not the best security - others do it better and far cheaper ! there are definitely viruses that norton doesnt catch - also I never said it supports adware - I said it is self promotional ! ADWARE self promotional !
well this at least is true, i had a spyware program creatted by the fbi that was a variation of 3 different spywares, with a 4th additional component..because its used by the fbi to investigate crimes its not included in the virus definitions, although norton was smart enough to recognize the 3 components eventhough theyd been highly modified (i had to manualy remove the viruses using nortons instructions and guessing at the modificationd which worked well..and removing the 3 exposed the 4th since it caused the 4th psart to crash..so was able to find and remove that. but the 4th part and the modified spybots werre never includded i have also been 1st to find several new viruses and submitted them to norton and they were included in the protection within hours where others took months to include them
edited in later Just to keep this an honest opinion - I have been reading a review of Norton 2007 at C-net and they rate it higher than last years as the code has been re-written - so I may try it again and let people know what I think - only trouble is I need a spare computer to try it on - !! but it does sound promising ! interestingly users still only rate it 3.3 out of 10 while rating bit defender at 6.3/10 http://reviews.cnet.com/Norton_AntiVirus_2007/4505-3667_7-32069537.html below is the original text of the post I'd be interested to know what that program was actually - it wasnt n-case was it, or a program they were going to call "carnivore" but then changed its name as it was too aggressive sounding - All I know about Norton is really from experience of installing networks - dell include it on a lot of their business machines -We got a hell of a lot of problems with it. also it tends to halt the installation of rival software - we used to run it about 3 years ago but then we thought its costing us more to fix problems with norton than it is to actually say to people "look even though you get this free its not cost effective " SOME PEOPLE LOVE IT - I'm not disputing that and all I can say is what experience taught me. SEE WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS REVIEW http://pcworld.com/article/124475-1/article.html My best advice is this though Never rely simply on antivirus that should be your last line of defence the best solution is - buy the best "hardware firewall" you can afford - dont rely on a desktop firewall. Use Firefox with the "noscript" plugin and "adblockplus" block as much advertising as poss - then get the mcafee siteadvisor plugin for firefox - finally add Greenborder and a decent antispyware program like the full version of adaware and/or pestpatrol Thats if you run a windows computer - With all of that on my computers I get a virus maybe - once - twice a year in a bad year on an xp box- but you can save time money and problems by switching to Linux I spend a lot of money on hardware firewalls my last one I bought was £600 about $1200 just for my home network - so you can imagine what we use for business firewalls. It pays to go that expensive as it comes with a lot of extras and I can opt to have all my traffic scrubbed outside my network if I pay a monthly fee, but I would even recommend you pick up a hardware firewall for around £100 or $200 .
I've tried Norton in 2003..got problems with it.. then I ran AVG,Antivir and Panda.. Bitdefender as well..now I'm back with AVG free.. it does..what it has to do..get rid of viruses.. for Trojans..another matter..the classics.. like Spybot and Ad aware..O.K..go ahead.. I think A2 is good..it's from Emsisoft..and free.. Tiger..
I agree w/your norton observations but will stay w/AVG Free. http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204989 macaffee (and most of the $$$ AVs) has been just as ineffective as nortonfrom my observations. I'm not sure which is more difficult to remove a symantec (norton) product or aohell.
Some good points have been raised. My personal opinion is don't go anywhere near Norton. I've used it before and it caused way too many issues. I've been surfing for many years.! The most fail safe answer is having two PC's, one to surf, one to work on. That's what I do. I've used Zone Alarm (but don't use the free version, buy the product.) I have now moved onto Kerio which has been superb (you get a full free trial version to test it out). I don't think I'll ever change from Kerio now.! And like others have said, scrap Internet Explorer and use Firefox, using Firefox is simply the best advice I can give you........I.E. seriously sucks.!
Norton is wrecking their own market with their software that's bundled into PCs. It constantly badgers you with pop-up ads. I ended up removing from my PC. It was acting too much like a virus. .
just last week a freind who iused avg was having alot of issues with herpc running like crap..i had her run the online free version of norton./.. norton found 23 threats that avg missed, both viral & non viral (adware spyware malware & hacker programs) it cleaned up the 23 threats & her pc ran fine...i wouldnt say avg is better then norton, & i wouldnt call norton bloated or anything since it catches so many more catagories of threats that others dont even test for if your systems runnin poorly & your avg or other free or cheap av isnt catching anything go to symantecs support site & find the free online scan & try it yourself..if u are infected it'll find it
huh? the popups are maybe to remind you to keep it updated? it doesnt act like a virus it acts like a virus protection package should, remindiong you to stay protected\ but i havent ever noticed popups unless u mean reminders to purchase/register trialware if so doesnt almost every trialware do that? is this your 1st pc?
Norton needs to rethink its strategy. Yes, its bundled software acts like a virus. Many trialware, adware, malware, and scumware do this too. That's not saying much for Norton. Their earlier versions didn't behave this way. Reminders are ok but there should be an option to easily turn them off or at least turn down the ads to once per hour instead of every minute. .
We need an anti-virus remover to get rid of Norton and AOL. It's like they worm their way into the system. .
There are free solutions that also work great when I used windows 2000 pro I installed avast antivirus and it worked nicely there also is avira antivir or avg antivirus... I stopped using norton since 2001 in addition to a good antivirus program you can also install a antispyware scanner avg has a free version avg antispyware and a system cleaner ccleaner. Last year a bug in norton antivirus caused it to be vulnerable to letting it become part of a botnet that is why I do not trust it. If you have a old pc you can turn it into a firewall/router which cuts the costs of buying a firewall/router with some tweaking you can set up a home network....
