Hey yo... I'm living in the Berkshires but I might take a trip to the Northampton/Amherst area soon--I hear it's pretty hip for the NE. (Not to mention all the lesbians ^_____^) Anyone know the good places to go? Shops, hangouts, areas, etc? Blessed Be, Cailie
Northhampton is a pretty chill place. Id definately sugest checking out the haymarket, they have a ll kinds of shops in there that are fun to look at. Also check out harrels ice cream! its some of the best ice cream around the area. P.S. Dont get too excited by the lesbians. 90% of them look like guys and are butch as fuck! Enjoy.
noho is one of my fav places...its so alive and theres so much stuff to do there. make sure you go to thorns market
I LOVE noho. I lived there for 9 months a few years ago. One of the above posters meant "Thornes market" that is full of little shops. The haymarket is a cafe/vegetarian restaurant. You should check out Raven's used book store, and Mama Igunana's mexican restaurant for their cheap tapas and house margaritas! It's just fun to hang out there and meet new people. I loved it.
Thorn's is the place to be. I recommend the Tibetan store on the second floor. The people who work there are extremely nice - strike up a conversation with them, they always put something extra in your bag before you leave. I've gotten some nice freebies from there (picture of H.H. the Dalai Lama, an "I <3 Tibet" bumper sticker, etc.) There is also a shop called the Mercantile down the road. I got a great pair of pants and skirt from them. A bit gruff when I go in there - but worth it. You say you are from the Berkshires, any particular area? Though I am in CT, I consider the Berkshires my home with as much time I spend there. Maybe I've bumped into you from time to time! ~SPeace
Oh wow a Noho thread! ::Aeonsbeyond's Aging Hipsters Guide to Northampton:: Noho is a great place for hippiefolk and hipsters of all ages sexes and kinds from anywhere...an extremely liberal well educated population, excellent restaurants & bars as well as clubs & theaters, and very beautiful in the spring with great countyside all around it. People from Boston and CT and NYC often come on weekends so the scene is always colorful and thriving despite economic ups and downs. Theres been a pretty good arts and music scene here for decades, a few local clubs like the Iron Horse and Pearl Street occasionally get great rock/alternative acts. Recent 60s acts of note include Lou Reed, Blue Cheer and this fri 5/9 the Electric Prunes! Noho and this area do have longstanding but somewhat forgotten HIPPY roots, which have been resurging in recent years with sporadic street protest/theater/music on sunny days esp. in Pulaski Park or in front of the Haymarket coffee shop. :Calling All Freaks: stop by sometime you'll have fun we can always use more crafty charcters out here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northampton,_Massachusetts Valley advocate paper: http://www.valleyadvocate.com/ noho.com forums: http://www.noho.com/nohoboard/ driving thru downtown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhUMYBdCVzQ
why do I bother? 2 months ago since I reposted this thread...nobody gives a ratsass about gay retarded little Noho...the town is a waste of space
It is certainly not a waste, I visited NOHO, then I moved there. There is no place better, been here for 2+ years by choice. Great Vibes, smart people, beautiful urban oasis in the middle of western mass's happy valley.:cheers2:
I like NorthHampton, it's really cool. I've been walking around there lately, I like it. There's a lot of restaurants and people playing music on the sidewalks. There are a lot of hip people there. Anyone know of any good clothing stores there? I did see some vintage clothing stores last time I was there but they were closed.
I heard plenty of good things about NoHo, and had to ask: Are folks generally OK with others being barefoot in public places? I usually am, and I use that as my "hip barometer" when I visit other towns/cities. In my hometown of Albany, folks are WAY uptight about it. In Portland, OR, I was very impressed with the open-mindedness. Just curious
