i hav great ideas for riffs, but i hav no band, can't make lyrics, plus I suck. bad equation for a rock guitarist.
Hmmm, you have great ideas for riffs, so you're OK there. No band, then start looking around for other musicians. What I did was putting up a notice on school's bulletin board(uhh...not the internet one, just so you know) saying "Band members wanted!!". I got a drummer and a bass player no problem that way. Now, I don't have a bad right now, and the reason for that is because I have since decided to become a solo artist. Let's see, you can't write lyrics.... Why not? Also, why lyrics? I'm mostly an instrumental guitar player, and I'm totally happy with myself. Hmm, and plus you suck? No worries, you can totally change that. You have to work hard for it, though. And finally, I don't see your situation as a bad equation for a rock guitarist at all. You don't NEED lyric in order to be a rock guitarist. If you want to learn how to write lyrics, just write down what comes in your head. Write down how you're feeling, write about your views on things. Tweak the wording right, and there you have some lyrics. Once you get comfortable with the idea, start playing around with poetry, and learn some things about metaphor, simile, and rhymes and such. All in all, just love your music.
I had trouble finding musicians to play with for a while too. I got lucky and stumbled upon a few very talented ones. Hang out in music shops and talk to people there. Most music shops will let you post flyers too. As far as lyrics go, sometimes they come sometimes they don't. Sometimes I can write, sometimes I can't. Alot of times I'll get ideas for a line and I'll just write that down and finish the rest later. When I have something that I just can't really turn into song, I write poetry. Concerning the "I suck" factor, just find music you like to play and play it alot. Maybe do a few excersizes to build up your picking speed. Learn all of the notes on the fretboard, learn your scales, and learn your chords. Another thing that helped me progress as a guitarist was learning my favorite artist's songs from tablature sites.
