During an unsuccessful bail hearing in April, a prosecuting lawyer outlined how the investigation began in March 2018 when Scottish police alerted the PSNI to a so-called “catfish” incident involving a 12-year-old girl who was befriended on Snapchat.

It is the police case that the schoolgirl sent a naked picture of herself to the defendant, who is then alleged to have blackmailed her that “if she didn’t do what was asked her image would be uploaded to the internet”.

Police enquires identified McCartney and when his home was searched, police seized a computer and mobile phone which when examined, officers allegedly uncovered thousands of images of young girls in “various states of dress and undress, performing various sexual acts”.

After that initial complainant came forward, over the next number of months three more alleged victims reported that the same thing had happened to them, including being told to perform sexual acts on themselves and younger siblings, to take images of their younger siblings and even to have “sexual penetration with animals, namely dogs”.

Arrested and interviewed for those initial allegations, McCartney refused to answer police questions and was originally formally charged last July.

Cheshire catfish creates hundreds of fake social media profiles to stalk men and women
Matthew Hardy, 30, would pose as family or friends of his victims online to get information that would cause embarrassment.

Once he gained their trust, he would send them messages that he knew were lies in order to create rifts among their families, all while hiding behind his computer screen.

His hideous campaign has led to some of his victims changing their daily habits and has caused some of their long-term relationships to break down.

Hardy pleaded guilty to three counts of stalking with intent to cause alarm or distress, two counts of stalking without intent to cause alarm and breaching a restraining order from 2013, which banned him from using false details on social networking sites.

The 30-year-old also admitted stalking a further four women.

During a hearing at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday (January 26), Hardy was sentenced to nine years in prison and told he would serve a minimum of four-and-a-half.

Real-life catfish who posed as Leicester City star jailed for sexual assault
The predator bombarded a teenager with messages after creating fake stories designed to encourage the victim to send sexual images of herself and lured her to his home

A fantasist stalker who sexually assaulted a woman after catfishing her by pretending to be a Premier League footballer for Leicester City has been jailed.

Daniel Storer, 22, embarked on the ten month campaign of terror by creating fake accounts on social media to make contact with the 18-year-old victim.

He bizarrely posed as a footballer, police officers, lawyers, a paramedic, a vet, university students, a cancer patient and some of the identities he adopted were of real people.

A court heard he bombarded the teenager with messages after creating fake stories designed to encourage the victim to send sexual images of herself.

When she blocked him Storer became increasingly obsessed and used further messages to lure her to his home where he sexually assaulted her.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, managed to bravely make an audio recording of the attack and contacted police in December last year.

Detectives launched an investigation and found Storer was linked to the false accounts.

Coleen Nolan caught female catfish after spotting strange reflection in pal's picture
Loose Women's Coleen Nolan told the panel how she once uncovered a catfish after her friend began talking to a 'gorgeous' man online. The pair eventually uncovered the shocking truth!

Coleen Nolan revealed to the Loose Women panel that she once uncovered a female catfish that had been speaking to her close pal.

The 56-year-old television star had joined panelists Janet Steet-Porter, Ruth Langsford, and Gloria Hunniford on Wednesday's show when they turned to the question of catfishing.

The term, made popular by the MTV show Catfish, is normally used to refer to a person that has established a fake profile and a fictional persona usually a trick someone.

During the show, Coleen explained to the panel that she was very 'savvy' when it came to spotting a catfish after her friend had a run-in with one some years earlier.

      • The note read: "Why would I buy you a bottle of perfume if I had no intention of meeting you?!? Why Claire?"

However, Coleen and her friend Claire were stunned to notice that the reflection in the bottle of perfume was actually that of a woman.

Coleen added: "It was a catfish and it wasn't even a male, it was a female!"
