they are on a fucking beach and no one is ever barefoot... WTF ? for those that haven't seen it .. the Lost is about survivors of an aircraft crash that landed on a beach. There is some mysterious force on the island that has snatched a couple of the survivors. anyhoo, they've had several scenes with the people on the beach and never seen anyone barefoot ...
The producers and directors of TV dramas as well as sitcoms are totally out of touch with reality and the way real people live. It's obvious when you compare Lost, a made up drama, with something like Survivor, which uses real people. Both take place on beaches. No barefooting on Lost, lots of barefooting on Survivor. Another example: in Still Standing (a very funny sitcom on CBS), most of the action takes place in the living room or kitchen of the characters’ home. Not only is no one EVER barefoot there, they put their chronically shod feet up on the couch and other furniture all the time. Wouldn't most people at least take off their shoes before they put their feet on the couch? Now compare that living situation to the reality show Big Brother, which also takes place mostly inside a house. Most of the people there are usually barefoot – just like most real people are when relaxing in their own homes. What is it about the producers and directors of these fictional shows that keeps them from portraying people more realistically?
Ahhh the ol' Sherwood Schwartz shows, take the Brady Bunch for instance, six kids and the only time they were barefoot was when going to bed. I believe I recalled one episode where one of the boys got out of bed, put on their slippers just to go across the room. Now Gilligan's Island. What can I say, being stranded on a deserted island in the tropics, would most folks wear shoes with all of that sand, water, palm trees and no concrete? In fact the first few episodes, the Skipper and Gilligan were actually barefoot when sleeping in their hammocks. Also, I do recall the Skipper exiting one of the huts in his barefeet when sleepwalking. A little dose of reality back in those days. Sadly, later in the series both the Skipper and Gilligan were always shod, even when sleeping! I'll bet some viewers complained about seeing barefeet like they did with the series called the Walton's, a series based on a real life family growing up in Virgina during the 1930's and 40's.
I've lived in quite a few places; here in the Netherlands & in the US (TX, WY & CO; various small towns in WY & CO, & Garland/Dallas in TX) and almost everyone I know keeps their shoes on inside. In the country there are a few more people who kick their shoes off when coming inside but they go sock-footed unless it was hot out and they weren't wearing any socks. Kids & people in their 20's/30's are also more likely to kick their shoes off but still wear socks as often as not. Older adults? I don't know ONE who doesn't wear shoes inside the house, like my mom & her circle of friends.
I've never watched Joey, but I will try to watch it now. When the girls showed their feet, did anyone react to them in some negative way? That's usually what happens in these sitcoms. For example, in one Listen Up episode, the Jason Alexander character's daughter put her bare feet up on the table and her father acted very offended by it. That's usually the message we get even if bare feet are shown.
Perhaps I shouldn't have said "most" people are barefoot within their own homes. I think "many" would be more accurate, at least based on my own observations and experience. I do know a few people who never remove their shoes inside, and some others who wear only socks inside, but I have seen actually a lot of people, young and older, who go barefoot when in their own homes. So I think a TV show that showed some people, at least once in a while, barefoot in their home would not be unrealistic at all. I just don't understand why they can't do that.
I love that episode of Listen Up! A couple of months ago I saw the preview and had my VCR ready to tape that segment. That girl is a CUTIE!, her luscious bare soles and toe wiggling propped up on the kitchen table was more than I could take!!!! How sexy! Hollywood needs more of that!
I actually have it in my head that I want to write a television screenplay for a character who is ALWAYS barefoot... Regarding Lost, I know that there are a couple barefoot-friendly characters. The Korean guy who is the fishermen is barefoot a lot because of him spending a lot of time in the water trying to net or spear dinner for the rest of the group. Shannon is also usually barefoot or at most wearing some sort of flip flop sandals. I think there's good reason for these particular characters to be seen wearing shoes on the beach though - what with polar bears, a nutty French woman with a rifle, semi-superhuman mysterious strangers and God-only-knows-what-else that can pick people up off the ground and shred them apart, leaving their bloody entrails strung up in the trees. If I were on that island, I think I'd have looked for a good pair of trainers too...no way would I be caught running from a polar bear through the jungle in bare feet! I'm desperately longing for the DVD release though so I can vidcap the one episode where Evangeline went swimming in her undies...including some nice shots of her feet! *drool*
Actually there was a show with an always barefoot character. It was Tarzan and it was on in the fall of 2003 on the WB network. If you're not familiar with it, it was an updated version of the old Tarzan movie series, with Tarzan being brought to America and trying to survive in modern-day New York City. It was kind of a drama/love story, and the Tarzan character, though wearing regular clothes, was alway barefoot, much to the astonishment of the other characters in the story. It really showed barefooting in a good light, IMO, and I was really disappointed when it went off the air after about 8 episodes. If anybody is interested in finding out more about it, just go to Google and put in "Tarzan WB," and you'll get lots of hits.
about Tarzan .. the actor was a model and he never wears shoes, so the part of Tarzan being barefoot was natural for him.
same thing when 'malcolm in the middle' was new-there were several episodes that had the boys barefoot at home-but after the first season, i guess they could afford shoes and no feet seen since...
As I recall, Paul Reiser was often seen barefeet in Mad about you. I think even more than Helen Hunt was, but it may be that I remember HIM being barefoot better because it is more rare that you see a guy in his bare feet. I think Reiser was seen barefoot only in his home; to me it always had the suggestion of 'Hey, I'm feeling safe and comfy in my house'.
A few weeks ago on ABC's PrimeTime Live, Diane Sawyer interviewed Teri Hatcher, of Desperate Housewives, in Teri's home. Teri was barefoot during the whole interview, as Diane so noted when she first walked into her home. At one point while they were sitting and talking, Diane slipped off her shoes as well. I love to see that - people being natural and barefoot, especially a well known celebrity.
