Surely you remember her: She has been diagnosed with dementia, at 85. This lady really made a name for herself and changed a lot of attitudes in the US. She and Shatner made history in the episode "Plato's Children" Kirk and Uhura's kiss - Wikipedia 'Star Trek' star Nichelle Nichols diagnosed with dementia: report (sorry for the link origin) I can only hope that her state is peaceful. I've only seen dementia a couple of times in my family (Mom's actually crazy, it's not dementia). Nichelle will be missed.
She was planning to leave the series to pursue a Broadway career but at an NAACP meeting she was told a fan wanted to meet her.... When so told Gene Roddenberry, the original creator of the show....he cried.
A lot is said about TV icons but in this case it it well-justified, in the world of yesterday, that today's generation cannot really appreciate, he contribution was historic and opened the door for many other Female, Black, Actor(/esses) to follow. -
Very sad I know she’s not dead yet (although dementia often speeds up the process) but I couldn’t think of a better final tribute than to put the words “Hailing Frequencies Are Open” on her gravestone
She has always had a wonderful disposition and I'm sure if anyone can handle aging gracefully, she can.
Big fan, she was a pioneer and all that. But news that an 85 year old has dementia...meh...so? She's lucky she made it to 85
Ha ha ha! I remember when Nichelle did a Playboy centerfold. She was nicely built! Well, ye-ah! That's their job so the blue & yellow shirts can live foreever and rake in 8 figure incomes from all the movies they make. Didn't you know that?
Wow. Sad to read this. I met her once quite some time ago at the Disney Studios. She was very personable.
I remember it bothering me when she did a commercial for Psychic Encounters back in the 90s. She should have known better than that.
Did she predict strangers on the internet would question the validity of her name 20 years later? I had already come kicking and screaming into the world, she should have felt the energy brewing
Nichelle Nichols wanted to leave Star Trek after the first season to star on Broadway, but Martin Luther King Jr. convinced her to stay since he was a Trekkie. Oh, that's drunk history - never mind
