Am I a Socialist? I'm not sure but I certainly am something...Different. The problem with Socialism is people think they can't have nice things, and this ain't necessarily so. What do you think?
I don't know, it seems like every time there's a textbook failure of socialism, the story becomes "well, that wasn't ACTUAL socialism". Which sounds like a bid to keep suggesting that it can work in the modern age. I doubt it can unless the government trying to make socialism work is able to remove electronic communication from the masses and only let them have receivers for a very narrow band of frequencies. Naturally the government will control every printing press in the country as well (especially the ones that make money). Consider that most of the creative work that defined socialism is now over a century old with very few revisions. Instead it was accepted as a perfect text, like it was a Bible or something! So the very model for socialism is antiquated and horribly out of touch with the modern world. This is also why unions are failing, they refused to modernize. And that's another facet of socialism, the lack of innovation. Which makes socialist nations vulnerable to technological changes from the rest of the world. It's no wonder they'd prefer to simply rule the entire planet. It's the only way to make socialism work, in a controlled, isolated bubble.
Have you ever noticed how socialist despots love posters of themselves? They also like the color red.
A 'textbook failure'? What's that? I don't know why you think private individuals are more trustworthy than public officials. NPR is far more objective than FOX. In fact, FOX is essentially Trump's personal propaganda network at this point. FOX is actually lowering the dignity of American society as a whole, and is probably directly responsible for Trump being elected. Ah I get it... you're just making shit up. Okay, continue.
I would say-(again) that with the latest report on climate change, capitalism, if not stopped/ changed, will continue to flood the ocean with plastic, the air will get worse, important crops will be unable to grow because of weather extremes, and as we are seeing, the weather is changing for the worse. I liked making money and have been flush with it at times and have been voluntarily poor at other times. It's been fun having the choices to live as I wish. Those /these days will be deemed a true aberration in the not too distant future. The gist will be--"Didn't those people give a damn about the future and those who have to live in it?" It appears as if "we'll" just wait until life changing effects in nature become more obvious. That's the situation now, however stasis will be the end of sentient life if the super rich don't begin to take this seriously and let common sense determine how "we "proceed. The super rich---yeah. Those are the ones that buy the laws under which we live. The "Money is free speech"folks. The Citizens United folks. The whole rig is based on the extraction of resources, which are turned into "needs" that we have been convinced that we must have, to the deleterious effects we are are now seeing on mother earth. What to do? Short term, get the republicans out of office, then NAG THE SHIT out of the democrats/independents to tackle the problems of State in an orderly manner that will benefit all citizens, especially those that have been put upon and ignored while the rest of us made money and had choices. I don't know how this country can change for the better unless something drastic takes place. The coral is dying worldwide, various island cultures are already feeling the effects on their societies with the ocean beginning to flood their ancestral homes, among many other manifestations. We'll soon see how this supreme court nomination works out---but I'm not optimistic. I'll be dead as the proverbial door nail when the chaos hits, but I fret for you young ones and your futures.
I think there are, or were, many very popular and beneficial socialist programs, at least in the U.S. Such as: The highway system and infrastructure, military, public libraries, police, fire departments, post office, student loans, landfills, farm subsidies, the FBI, CIA, Polio vaccine, the EPA, public schools, public museums, the prison system, corporate subsidies, public parks, elected officials, the courts, bird flu vaccine, the G.I. bill, Hoover dam, public zoos, uniemployment insurance, PBS, the CDC, the IRS, school lunches, the FDA, Swine flu vaccine, Social Security, Medicare, the Civilian Conservation Corps, food stamps, Aid to Families with Dependent Children, FEMA, the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, The Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid, TRICARE, the Children's Health Insurance Program, the Veterans Health Administration, the End Stage Renal Disease Program, Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Services Block Grant, Boys & Girls Club, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, Amtrak, NPR, the Department of Homeland security, USDA, governmental scholarships, Department of Energy, the census, the CBP, Department of Ed, Peace Corp, the DOJ, etc. All paid for in whole or part by government tax money, Collected from individuals and corporations and managed by society for the benefit of all.
One quibble. You're using "Socialism" the way it's often used by the right-wingers who write in to the editors of newspapers, which makes sense for some of the folks on this thread. Technically, though, Socialism involves ownership of the means of economic production and distribution in a society. This is the major distinction between Social Democrats and Democratic Socialism. I balk at sticking the "Socialist" label on virtually every form of collectivism or public activity. To me, Bernie is not a Socialist, just a confused a Social Democrat. When Americans see they can still have materials goods that their neighbor does not and be socialist we will be close to that goverment. The #1 fear and complaint I hear in this country is the idea that somehow hard work means nothing now. You can not have a big house or new BMW and most people will not even work hard since this is not possible. We will all live in poverty and laziness as the goverment oppress us. The Red Scare of the Cold War was very effective. 30 years after the USSR ceases to exist they are still the biggest enemy. Unless it's Putin of course then it's hyper capatilsim and OK even if he's a legit KGB agent who no doubt spent many years training to fight America in the old days. The 1% will always work hard to keep this myth alive since the system as it benefits them. In human farming if you can make some cows (humans) love the system they will defend it more so than you the elite ever could. You are small in number they are large. There is a reason why the poorest Americans hate socialism the most. They are trained to so they can keep producing that sweet milk.
I like how people in socialist countries have no money and do their best to flee to capitalist countries. That's a nice thing.
How could anybody in their right mind oppose socialism? Who doesn't want free stuff? Besides, it has worked so splendidly wherever it has been adopted. Venezuela, Bolivia, Vietnam, North Korea, Russia .... China takes the cake with perhaps 80 million murdered in the name of creating the new communist society.
