So I've been in on the old psychedelic, stuff like Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, etc. for a while, but I haven't gotten into the modern psychedelic until my friend introduced me to Tame Impala a coupla months ago. I know a couple of bands, I know Purple Overdose and Pond, but other than that, not much music that is strictly psychedelic. There's a lot of "acid indie" (ex. NMH) that I dig but that's not what I'm looking for right now. Anyone know any other good psych/garage bands?

Yeah man, there's so much newish psych rock stuff. Here's some of my favorites:

Bardo Pond - really intense, epic, heavy, disorienting psychedelia. Easily the trippiest band in existence at the moment.

Flying Saucer Attack - tagged "rural psychedelia," it's the project of lo-fi experimentalist David Pearce. The music ranges from psychedelic, expansive folk music to soundscapes to noise-rock.

Spacemen 3 - the premier space-rock/psych-rock band of the last 30 years. Drugged-out, hazy, minimalist rock.

Six Organs of Admittance - very atmospheric, psychedelic folk and ambient-leaning music with ethnic influences.

Brian Jonestown Massacre - another premier psych-rock band. Great modern psychedelia, check out their record "Their Satanic Majesties Second Request."

Olivia Tremor Control - wonderful psychedelic pop with musique concrete influences. From the same pool of bands that NMH came from.

Espers - a wonderful psych-folk group. Beautiful singing and harmonies.

Acid Mothers Tempel - in a similar vein as Bardo Pond, just epic, jammed-out, fried, krautrock-influenced psychedelic onslaught.

Dungen - some quality Scandinavian psychedelic rock.

If you love Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, you'll love Animal Collective. I've mentioned them a lot on other threads, too. Seriously, to me they're THE psychedelic band of this day, because they really push the envelope with multiple layers of music, and they don't hold back. Their style of psychedelia is very incredibly unique, too. I'd go so far as to call them modern pioneers. They're definitely more along the lines of strictly psychedelic. The indie crowd loves them, but their music isn't really indie at all.

If their music was released earlier, they'd be regarded as classics. But given the climate of the record industry right now, they're still fairly underground, despite the success of their last album.

Check out my Animal Collective Appreciation Thread. I posted links to a couple of their albums if you want to get started. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=451979&f=270

Grizzly Bear is another good band to check out. They're really laid back, and have chamber pop, rock, folk and psychedelic elements. Their "Veckatimest" album is incredible.

FYI, I started out as a fan of 60's psychedelic rock as well. Both bands definitely have a Brian Wilson influence, too.

Here's something new. It's a take on instrumental psychedelic rock. We incorporate a heavy electronic integration via an array of analog synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers all run through multiple effects chains live throughout the music. All this including heavy acoustic and electronic drums, bass, and guitar, accompanied with live visuals. We're called "Transmute." We are trying to recreate a psychedelic experience through an audio/visual production. The visual experience of the music is all thought out and triggered live from another member of the band off to the side. However, in this video there was a light guy at the venue that didn't know our music. So it could have been better.
Anyway I hope you guys like it. I know there has to be some like minded individuals in these threads who can appreciate this.

if you love pink floyd look up Josh Stone. His music is greatly inspired by pink floydd and he sounds very much alike with them. Follow him on twitter too, he follows back which is pretty cool

check out Viral Sound, and Dopapod. They are not as psychedelic as what you might be looking for but they are pretty groovy. Viral sound is a bit better in my opinion and I would love to trip on acid at one of their shows, would be better than christmas as a child
