The sheet material referred to is most likely polyester, a fabric that was a bit of a trend back in the 70s, when it was introduced, because of how easy it was to clean, as well as being cheaper than cotton sheets. However, as you say, the slipperiness was always a problem, as well as having a most unpleasant feel to them, although some people find the texture to be sexually arousing - something that is beyond my comprehension - even the thought of the material gives me the creeps.
