    Hello everyone,

I'm glad that I found this forum! been reading through some of the threads

A little bit about me, I've been in Australia for two months now, and loving it. I live in Melbourne, and since I'm new, my social circle is very tiny - or perhaps non existent yet :afro: . I work full time 9-5 so my days are usually busy-ish.

Now that Christmas is coming, I don't want to spend it all alone in Melbourne. I'm thinking of visiting Nimbin and maybe spend sometime in Sydney as well. I thought staying in a backpackers would be ideal.

    Any suggestions?

any interesting stuff going on in Melbourne that you guys recommend?

    cheers
    :2thumbsup:

What about going to Sydney Confest held on January long weekend? You have to bring a tent, or a sleep in vehicle better to bring your own food although you can buy it there. There is no new year Confest this year.

    Hi Bilby,

I've never been to Sydney before. I had to Google "confest", sounds interesting. Is it cool for solo travellers? I don't have Aussie drivers license yet by the way. One guy at work is interested in travelling with me on Christmas but he didn't confirm yet.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I will spend few days in Nimbin and the rest exploring Sydney. I have two weeks off :)

From Melb you could drive up North into the snowy mountains if you lke that sort of thing. It's generally pretty quiet in there through Christmas times. Then you could keep goin North up to Sydney and wherever. Mountains are going to increase your travel time drastically, but there's hardly anything better than hearing those cicadas SCREAM in the aussie bush.

@Irminsul: Thanks for the recommendations. Driving is not an option for me at the moment, I'm still dependent on public transportation, but I'll keep that in mind :)

I used to live in Canberra. It's not a bad city, it gets a lot of bad reputation from people but I don't know why. Because the prime minister lives there and a lot of workers are public servants. Now that chain stores have capitulated around the word there's no need for Canberrans to travel to Sydney for shopping centres. That's all that was ever wrong with Canberra. It's peaceful, quiet, cold mornings and nights in winter with warm days and damn hot in summer. It's surrounded by bushland mountains too so no matter where you are you look in the horizon and you're staring at the wonderful highlands.
I'm not a big city person at all so you'll never see me glorify big cities like Sydney.
But the east coast around Nimbin and Byron Bay is fantastic, you'll love it.

I lived in Canberra and it was cold half the year and hot the other half.

OP > 'supertramp'. Are you referencing "Christopher McCandless aka Alexander Supertramp Into The Wild"?

What are you expecting to see in Sydney for a week ? A bridge and a building ?
Travelling anywhere between xmas and the end of January puts you right in the 'holiday season'. It makes everything crowded and more expensive. If you have a choice I suggest travel at another (more relaxed) time.

Where did you live before ?

I have always attended Confest by myself although I once had to get a lift. It is usually cheaper to fly to Sydney than drive even in peak times or there is the train. To get a lift to Sydney Confest either go to the FB page or their own forum and you should get a lift from someone.

yes, my name is in reference to Alexander Supertramp :2thumbsup:

I agree, that's why I was thinking along the lines of Nimbin and somewhere quiet. I'd like to meet new people too. you know being new in Australia and not knowing anyone, it's not exactly easy to make new friends if you know what I mean

Different places. The last one was Dubai. I love to travel. I plan on working in many countries...so yeah. I'm loving Australia :)

I like living in Melbourne but will definitely visit the major cities. I think Nimbin and Lismore are a good destination for a solo traveler

    Thank you :)

Be careful. You know how that turned out.

Nimbin and the NSW North Coast won't be quiet but it is 'Hippy Central' so you might find somewhere cool to go from there.

The Confest is a good idea but it's not at xmas.

At least coming from Dubai you prob know what hot weather is.

I hate every capital city in Australia except Sydney, luuuuv Sydney.

Nimbim, Byron especially is magic. My favourite part of Aus.

Get out of Melbourne, its a dirty shitty city, move to Sydney, everywhere else in Aus is too backwards

I read about Nimbin long ago, and wanted to visit it ever since.

Mmm interesting view there. I'm enjoying Melbourne, I have nothing to complain about so far, my experience has been brilliant. The only difficult thing is making friends, but it's getting better :2thumbsup:

Can't wait to visit Nimbin :)

I think you are being a bit unfair to Melbourne. The western suburbs are to be avoided but shall we say that even palaces require sewers. Although it is not that geographically that far away Acland Street in St Kilda is just like being in continental Europe. This is where the original Lentil As Anything vegetarian restaurant was set up. They do not have prices but just accept donations. What a cool idea!

Brunswick and Collingwood are also fairly bohemian with food outlets selling free range food. There was a pub in Collingwood that was off limits to heterosexuals. I thought this was going a bit far.
