im gonna start setting up a grow room in a week or so. i wanted to go with hps but im finding that they r a lot of money and id have to order a ballast off the internet. Im prolly gonna chose 3-4 40w compact flouros. as of now im just browsing but im more than open to suggestions...... as for the size of the new room....it will more than likely be a 5'-5' room but im not completely sure. # of plants will be around 10-20
Good luck, dont expect any yield from fluoros on 10-20 plants. One needs 50+ watts per sqft for flower to get a plants potential.
My 6x6 budroom has two 600w hps and a 1000 w halide . Im starting my seeds outdoors in the sun to test heartiness nowadays.Landlord just thanked me for removing my monster greenhouse, and gave me a greenlight for starting little ones out in a ditch in the yard. because my veg area currently has TW and SD moms in there. at least try 1000 watts in there like mean says.. Personally id get the sunsystem dual spectrum 1000 watter... You'll love it and you get two HID ballasts and bulbs in one hood- for about the price of any good HID or HPS system... www.discounthydro.com
rocketdude, you don't have to order parts off the internet. Use mail order. Check the phone book or internet for the phone #'s of growshops, call them and tell them what you want (be sure to ask for deals on used equip.). Find the price inc. tax $ shipping, send them a postal money order; they'll mail it to you. Ask to have it sent in a plain box. A HID set-up (like HPS) consists of 3 parts: the bulb, the ballast and the socket/reflector. You need all 3. A 5' x 5' space would require 1250 watts HPS. A couple of 600-watters new would set you back about $600--$700, used maybe 1/2 that much. My suggestion is to start smaller. 1 600-watt light for a 3.5' x 3.5' space or a 400-watt for a space slightly smaller than 3' x 3'. Keep in mind you will need ventilation when using a HID light; they get hot. And ventilation doesn't mean leaving the closet door open, it means an air-tight enclosure and a powered exhuast and intake. For a small enclosure the can get by with passive intake; for a bigger area you need both powered. Use 1 plant per sq/ft, toss the males when they express sex. Add: HPS is more expensive to buy, but it will grow you 3 x more bud than florescents and cost less to operate.
i was also thinking about getting a 150 watt hps but i really dont wanna pay that much lol....the ballast and bulb will be upwards alot so im trying to grow cheap.......anyone got anything around 100 bucks.....i dont want a big electric bill either... strugling college student u kno how it goes. but anyways wuts a cheap set up for around 100 bucks im open to ideas. BUT i dont really like that mail order etc. id like to find something in local hydroponic stores/nurseries/hardware store etc.

bUrNed oUt, if that set-up you purchased has a built-in ballast, you should remote it, to cut down on the heat inside your growspace.
yeah burned out thats it - theres a tutorial on overgrow on how to do it ( i looked into it when i was thinking of getting a light with built in ballast ) it didn't look that difficult to do ... that could bring your temnps down a bit in this hot weather
A compact ballist light assembly(ballist enclosed withinn hood) will create more heat as you are adding the heat the ballist puts out in conjunction with the bulb at the same level.I prefer to call em nobake ovens.
