I'm listening to them. This being an asshole by speaking their name in a thread dedicated to someone else. No worries, off to bed.
Why? Well so you could make a thread with the name in the title, catching my eye, and reminding me that I meant to download them.
they were my favorite group about 4 years ago. I brought them up here awhile back. Face Eater said they were like an inferior version of The Microphones (rubbish), Zilla said they were like an inferior version of Bob Dylan (???) and Stalk "didn't like them at all". I'm glad you're into it. can't say I really listen to them or any of the other Elephant 6 groups anymore but I have their 2 LP's on vinyl.
Well, the album cover for "Aeroplane Over the Sea" is pretty cool. That's about it. It would be cool if the music sounded the way the album cover looks.
For about a week maybe. I tried to like "them" (actually isn't it just one person... Jeff Magnum?), but never got into it. I might have went along with all the hype at the time because I thought there was something wrong with me not liking it while everyone else was raving like it was the best album ever made. It's just too pretentiously quirky and indie-in-a-bad-way for my tastes.
They're pretty damn decent, but I couldn't ever truly get into them. Of Montreal sucks balls, on the other hand... indie fag shit music.
Jeff Mangum wrote all the songs, but various personnel worked on the recordings. pretty sure they all belonged to the Elephant 6 collective, just like Mangum would show up on various other E6 releases. NMH are a really polarizing band.
I did like some of their older stuff, but they've gotten worse and worse. and I can't fucking stand Kevin Barnes. I still probably like Olivia Tremor Control.
Well, yeah, I know that. But aren't the people he worked with not really static members of the band. In other words, the name Neutral Milk Hotel was really just a project that revolved around Jeff Magnum, where he brought in outside musicians to record with. Am I somewhat right, or way off?
sort of. I don't feel like looking it up but I think the musicians were static around the time of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, as in the same guys who recorded it would play shows without a change in personnel. they were all part of the E6 commune thing though, and were in various other E6 groups/projects before and after NMH.
Jeff Mangum did write some really spectacular surreal lyrics though. and I don't even particularly care about lyrics.
I got into them recently and downloaded "Aeroplane Over the Sea", but I got bored with it too quickly, the guys voice kind of irritates me a little bit. I recommend checking out Barbie Bangkok's new album People and Geometry instead.
