have you got any examples of the media twisting the facts? war, celebraty related, phedophiles, etc etc etc anythign you can think of cheers
One striking case is highlighted by the documentary 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised'. Two Irish film makers caught the anti-Chavez coup on film and showed how the media at the time, owned by Venezuela's rich conservatives, conspired against Chavez by twisting the facts. The media showed images of demonstrators who had been shot, and then pictures of Chavez supporters firing hand guns. In reality, the documentary shows, those who were killed were pro-Chavez activists, who had been killed by anti-Chavez military snipers, and the Chavez supporters were firing back at the snipers, not killing people in the crowd. These manipulated images, created by a very selective use of footage, served to legimise the anti-Chavez coup and win it some degree of support, toppling his government. Of course he came back two days later on the back of a popular uprising and the rest, as they say, is history....
Yep, the sub-standard about a month ago, published the Rs finances - fees spent on agents. They made 5 years worth of fees look like they were all paid in one season. Ian Holloway went on a big rant about it and I believe Gianni Paladini is looking at legal action.
that iraq photo that was made up by some newspaper....uhm....might want to go on guardian archives or something...
The Mirror printed pictures of British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners. The photos were fake, but the Mirror didn't make them, they just presented them as fact without question. I don't think that's as bad as it sounds in this case, however, because it is well known that British soldiers have abused Iraqi prisoners, it's just these weren't photos of that abuse....
the use of the word chav is a good example of this. it was first used by the pop bitch website, but now it seems to be used out of context. its a pretty snobby really, used against any lower class person, but attatched to alcholism, domestic abuse, racism, and tracksuits. so anyone who wears a tracksuit can be assumed to be evil! have a look at www.chavtowns.com the bitterness and hatefulness of some of the people there is scary! before the word chav came along people would be looked upon far more as individuals!
Well, if you're spectacularly good at archive digging, back in the winter of 2001/2002 I remember the same photograph being represented in completely different ways between the Metro and the Sun. Afghan men with their usual depýcted array of machine guns were sitting on an armoured vehicle looking serious. The Metro caption read "Northern Alliance men attend the funeral of the much loved 'Tiger of the North' assasinated by the Talýban a few days ago." The Sun read "Afghans fire angrily in the air in protest against America." ~ Another good example is that of Leah Betts(sp?) Infamous for dying from Ecstasy. The truth is that she died of water poýsoning. Worse, the doctor that countered the medias opinion with his medical assesment of water poýsoning was hounded and lost his job due to media pressure. Gets even worse; Leah actually drank too much water while dancing all night after her and her friends were under the impression that you had to drink gallons of the stuff while taking the drug.. where did they read that? The tabloids. This subject is rather close to home for me. I also got water poisoning way back when i was 16 after my fýrst pýll. I also drank way too much due to the medýa rumour. I'm quite lucky to be alive.
