I posted this in another thread. I've had some people ask to buy some of my paintings. I am trying to come up with a fair price and need some advice. If you look at my paintings (Link found under Art Again thread), please know that the paintings are 15" x 11". I'm going to sell prints, and not the originals. I'm thinking something around $20 - $25 for a print, unmatted and unframed. Matting and frame would cost close to $100 if someone wants it that way, but most people would want the print alone and then they can get it matted and framed. I'm not planning on selling an original, but if I do, it would be more like $75 - $100.

I know this may be putting people in an awkward position, asking them to render an opinion of the worth of my art. But please know that I don't consider myself as a really good artist, and that just having people ask to buy my work is an honor, and if someone told me they would give $5.00 for a print, it would not insult me. I just don't want to ask more for my art than it is worth, so the opinion of other artists is essential to that cause. Thanks in advance, and if anyone would prefer to send me a message rather that posting in this thread, that's fine.

You have a nice style. Good colors. I suggest you visit a gallery or 2 and get some idea of what you should charge for prints. Or just accept what people offer.I've seen art I wouldn't give a nickel for that sells for large bucks. If you get a "following",there's no telling what your paintings could be worth. Just keep working at it. I'm not an artist, but I appreciate the work that can go into making it. Good luck.

agree with scratcho, you might not think youre that good but other people could be really into what you do (being an "other person" i think you have alot of skill and a great eye for composition). your art is very marketable. get your work out there and see what people will offer, you might be surprised.

why not just put a per-hour price on it

like maybe $50 an hour and then figure out how many hours it took and add the cost of whatever materials where used

maybe that would just be good for originals

maybe prints could be 25% of whatever number you came up with for an original and then add whatever it costs to get the prints made

Thanks for the advice. I'm not in a large city with a gallery, so the next time I go somewhere that has a gallery, I'll look. That's a good idea. The cost/hour also is a good idea. It really doesn't take me that long to paint what I've done to date (two to three hours, usually). The supplies are not a major factor in the cost, so it would only be my time. I've got a friend who is much better than I am, and she charges "what the market will allow." She does sketches of pets, in color or black and white, and charges $300 to $400 for framed originals.

I've also looked on line and have seen some art for sale, and the prices vary widely ($25 to over $500).

Last night, several people asked to buy some of my paintings. I feel so honored to be able to sell art that I've done. So far, 4 people have purchased prints. They are priced at $20-$25. A friend of mine told me that the originals would sell for $150 at a minimum. I trust her opinion, as she sells her art for $295-$395, but those prices include mat and frame. Thanks to everyone who gave me some help in setting the prices for my work.

    well done mate. =)
Of COURSE you'll be able to sell your art. It's beautiful.

I'm hoping to sell some of my art one day too. My approach will be to paint some large oil paintings and sell them at a market. (I'm using gauche at the moment though - having a lot of fun)
