So, in English this year, we need to do a comparative essay on two works of literature...(and no, I'm not looking for different suggestions of books, thanks) So I began looking up genres of books I liked and authors I was curious about and out of what turned up I came up with five different books..and I can only pick out two of them for this essay...

The books have to be comparable and of the same genre...But because I have never read any of them I though maybe somebody who has could help me out...

    These are the books:

When the Sleeper Awakes -- HG Wells
    Player Piano -- Kurt Vonnegut
    Island -- Huxley
A Tale of Two Cities -- Dickens
    Hard Times -- Dickens

I had all of these books approved by the teacher, she just wants to make sure I do the right combination (and have sufficient secondary sources...which was why We by Yevgeny Zamyatin wasn't approved :( ).

She basically said that I SHOULD either: Do the two Dickens books together OR make a combo of two from the other three choices (any will do apparently). I made the arguement that perhaps A Tale of Two Cities and When the Sleeper Awakes could go together based on what I read of the plot but she was a little bit discouraging and said it would be much more difficult...

Basically, if you have any advice or comments or anything of the sort on any of these books, or how they are, anything is great! I really could use some advice on which direction to take this project (but don't bother suggesting different books from the ones I already listed...)....I'll be checking back tomorrow morning at the latest because I need my final choices by tomorrow afternoon (hence the ASAP)..

    Thanks for everything!

Do yourself a favour and use Island by Huxley.

It's a great read, good story, full of insightful life philosophy. It was his last novel and gives a great insight into what this amazing man felt was important in life as he neared the end of his.

I haven't read the others on your list but from experience I know that it's easier to write papers about books you enjoy. I think 'Island' is a book that is almost impossible not to enjoy on some level.

    Good luck.
