I put dreads in about 3 months ago the knottyboy way. I realized the error of my ways soon after and washed most of the wax out. My dreads are looking better but still quite loose, especially around the root. I personally think that they look good but i don't get a lot of positive feedback from my peers. I go to this catholic school with a lot of rich preppy kids who don't really know anything about dreads, so you can imagine some of the comments:

    "cut your hair"
    "wash your hair"
    "your hair is odd"
    "those aren't real dreads"
    "tighten/thicken your dreads"
"OMFG look at this kids fucking hair" (they actually pronounce oh em ef gee)
    and my personal favourite:
"why did you get dreads? you're white."

Im just looking for some positive reinforcement and some constructive criticism.

That is a close up of some particularly loose ones. you can see that they are still just sort of straight hair. The ones on the back of my head are dreaded more but the ones in front are still loose because i keep screwing with them :p.

comments welcome. I particularly want to know any methods for tightening the roots.

those look great man. they'll definitely tighten up in time. i love the length.
ignore those comments you get at school, kids don't know what dreads are all about. make sure not to use wax anymore, if you have in the past.
but anyways, the roots will tighten on their own. if you really want to though, you could take the dread at the root of your head and rub it in a circular motion. i wouldn't suggest doing that, though. i've tried it and it makes your head sore :O
    just give it time.

they look really good! i love how long your hair is, those will look great when they are locked up.
dont worry about the looseness, its part of the process. its actually good that they arnt too tight because the wax will come out easier. just give it a few months and you will see plenty of progress, im sure :)

they look sweet man!! ive been getting lots of negative feedback too. just ignore it. i always come here when i need some positive reinforcement.

your dreads are doing great and im fairly new to this but from what im told will only look better with time. great job man!

by the way.. the fact that they say "oh em ef gee" makes them waaaay lame... they might as well suck in their bellies and pop their collars too.

    i love your hair!
time is the key. when i first got mine they were so loose by the roots, when i see pics im like wow i dont even remember them looking like that. i could like put my fingers through them and pull them apart.
now they are almost 2 years old. i still got a lot of frizees, and most my ends arent dreadded, but ya gotta love em.
i used wax on mine, like once a week. still do occasionally. just to keep the frizees in cause my hair was curly before. and a salt spray like maybe twice or three times a week.
oh. and i love the length or ur hair!! and dont listen to peoples negative comments. their just jealous you have better looking hair then they do.:D

your dreads are sick, dont worry about it.

dont listen to those idiots. I'm actualy really suprised your school even allowed your hair like that. Most catholic schools will not allow dreadlocks unless you are black.

Fuck those white christian nationalist conservative assholes.

ps. I'm sorry if i offend anybody.

Don't they make your scalp itchy?

I have a bunch of friends with dreadlocks.. a couple of them look ok, the others don't look good at all. I don't understand what the appeal is? They make most people look dirty (me thinks).. I bet I'm making a lot of friends saying this in a hippy forum..

hey they look really good mate :) and they suit you. I went through the catholic rich kid school too and I know exactly how you feel. but some of the non-catholic non-rich kids like me eventually came out of the woodwork and told me how wicked my dreads were so... if you're patient you might find some lovers to counter the haters. peace!
