I got some spores and inoculated some sterilized rice jars, and everything went fine. Things grew slower than the YouTube videos promised, but whatever. I kept the jars in the laundry room, which stays around 80 degrees or so. When they were colonized nicely, I made some shoebox-sized tubs of pasteurized coconut coir mixed with perlite, and replaced them in the laundry room. Everything was slower than I expected, but otherwise it went very well. In a few weeks, my first tub had pins and I moved it to the bedroom, which is slightly cooler, and did what I'd seen on YouTube: set upside-down clear shoebox bins on top as terrariums. Here's where things went sideways. My yield is NOT as large as I was hoping. I got maybe a quarter-gram of dried golden teachers from that first bin, and the second one (which had even more mycelium than the first when it pinned) only has 2 pins. Can anyone give a suggestion? I was hoping for, like, a layer of caps across the whole bin, you know? This is my first time, and I'll listen to any suggestions.
Well your adventure sounds fun! I have never grown shrooms, but appreciate your efforts I hope someone here on the site has experience with that, and can offer some help.
Oh gods... I didn't expect ALL of my jars to survive, or for ALL of them to start taking when I went to the tubs... I now have four tubs of golden teachers that won't stop fruiting. One of them is sprouting its fourth flush. I didn't think that was a thing, I thought it was only 2, max. I'm getting +10g out of my dehydrator daily. I'm unloading them to all of my hippie friends and my stash jar is still filling up faster than I can empty it. And because I thought they were done fruiting, I started 2 more jars of GT and 2 of Penis Envy, they'll be in bins too, in a few weeks. So yeah... I guess I figured it out? Hell if I know what I did, though.
I think it was a matter of time and I wonder if you didn't happen to water them most of the time new people either have them too muddy to grow or when they start to fruit and suck all the water out to block dries up but it sounds to me like you were just waiting If you notice, that block is shrinking on you. you should soak saturate that thing and it will keep on giving. Like pour distilled water in and the cake will float on it for a bit then get soaked and pour off the rest (or) saturate it by adding 3 cups of water in top until it soaks in and then see. Coir dries right back out like you got it and flushes suck the water fast. Congratulations and best wishes for more! New Mexico people (and anybody) can you help us get this around? Do you want to help? thanks! Donate to Support NM's Largest Exotic Mushroom Collection, organized by Karl Buchanan Hey there! AFTER YOU PICK ALL THE MUSHROOMS sorry I thought I got that in there. I most definitely mean after you've picked your whole flush and it's a bare cake again, looking all shriveled up
