a buddy and I took a crack at hunting in a town near Charlotte, NC and found what we believe to be P. cyanescens. they were very small compared to the others I've seen and not fully matured from what I can tell, if they are cyanescens. they are very rusted looking in color, more of an orange from cap to gills and the majority of the stipe. the dried/dying ones around it appeared as a pale tan/white cap and stipe. they were found in a cow pasture not on the poop but in an isolated damp area around some clovers. I tried one and it tasted almost exactly like a cubensis, smelled similar too. another kind we found grew directly on the poop and was much darker brown and gray/ashy gills. the stipe was a similar dark brown/red with an ashy look to it. a photo is attached, the cyanesense are on the left, the others are on the right. its a photo my friend sent me and I'm posting from my phone. they're drying out now but, whatever, that's them
you sure man? I have never come across or seen any before. here is a photo of what we got, dried up a bit in better light. are they at least active?
thanks for that, could they be some kind of gymnopilus? after eating the one I didnt necessarily feel anything because it was just one mushroom about the size of the upper part of your thumb, maybe a bit bigger. the taste was almost identical to cubensis (only ones Ive grown and picked so only identifiable reference, all others have been bought and nameless). Im mostly concerned with whether or not theyre toxic at this point as theyre not likely psychoactive
Psilocybe Cyanescens don't grow in pastures near manure. They are a wood loving species and grow in disturbed woody areas like garden mulch. Second of all your mushrooms don't appear to be staining blue. P. Cyan turn inky blue if you fart in their direction (see picture thedope posted) and have off white colored stipe and gills with a dark inky purplish black spore print. Lastly I don't know if in the entire history of shrooming anyone has ever found wild P. cyan in N. Carolina. The staining blue where bruised and the dark purplish spore print are the first things you should look for when even attempting to make a ID of psilocybin containing mushrooms in the US. The other mushroom you found looks and sounds like it could be Psilocybe coprophila (inactive species) or a species of Panaeolus (the smooth hemispheric cap with gray ashy gills growing directly on manure) but with no real details and a crappy cellphone picture it is really hard to tell. I have a PDF copy of Paul Stamets ID guide to Psilocybe Mushrooms of the World which is the best source for the wild magic mushroom hunter. Shoot me a PM and Ill hook you up with it before you and friends go and get yourselves killed.
Gymnopilus junonius grow on dead wood..... I really wish you would at least try to make an effort to research mushrooms before you start popping them into your mouth.... there are alot of deadly mushrooms out there and you only need to eat one thumb sized one to sign your death warrant. For example here is a mushroom growing on dead wood And here is another mushroom growing on dead wood They look sorta similar (about as similar as your mushroom looks to a P. Cyan). The major difference is if you ate one small specimen of the first one you would be dead by the weekend and the second one may give you a nice trip.
I do not recognize them as psycho active. Mushrooms predominately have that mushroom taste and so taste is not a reliable metric for the identification of psychedelic mushrooms. I cannot positively identify the correct species at a distance but the macro features I can see do not equate to any psychoactive that I know, that is other than they are mushrooms. If you have cyanescens in your area, you would find them always in association with wood chips or woody debris. They are primary as well as secondary decomposers of wood. If you find them in a lawn or pasture, there must be woody debris in the soil.
very well, thanks for the help. this was my first time in going out in NC so I was basing what I knew on my experience in FL. Im not gunna bother justifying myself to you other cats, I knew what I was looking for and I came here because I wasnt sure of what I found. the batch will be tossed and you fellas can sleep easy.
To me those look like Cyanesence <stupid lab names so hard to spell) But I would buy a field guide if I were you. And post a picture of the sporeprint, it will be much easier to identify them for you. Also next time take a picture of the habitat and what state you live in And please dont ever eat a mushroom you dont know. You WILL DIE, you have been warned. If you feel a migraine, puking, paleness, fatigued the next day death may be around the corner. But dont panic, look up symptoms of mushroom poisoning and keep a phone nearby.
