Most species of Acacia carry only a small amout of phenethlamines and tryptamines. I was suprised to see that naturally occuring amphetamine and methamphetamine are actually found in nature: http://users.lycaeum.org/~mulga/acacia/
Tend to agree. Some plants produce alkaloids as a defense against insect & animals. Some plants seem to produce alkaloids purely as a gift to man.
I usually don't bend to pressure, but you asked me so nicely I removed my doggie from the sig. Happy?
of course they do. Ma Huang has been used by the chinese for centuries. certain amino acids (such as phenylalanine) in plants get converted to catecholamine (dopamine/epinephrine) analogues...that is, amphetamines and phenethylamines. similarly, many plants convert tryptophan into tryptamines. the magic is done by enzymes.
Although Ma Huang contains ephedrine, it doesn't synthesize its hydrogenated cousin, d desoxyephedrine. Acacia is the first species I've known to produce the substance.
that's true. never figured acacia to contain meth (because it wasn't the alkaloid I was looking for), but apparently, it's in a species found in Texas.
