Hey guys. I've just recently stumbled upon these forums (I've been looking for dreading methods), and I can't help but notice that eveyone always wants "clean dreads": all the same size, nice and round, ect. This is not, however, what I want. For some reason dreads like these have always fascinated me - Not exactly most peoples' definition of "clean", but I love them. I'm hispanic with hair around 7 inches long that greatly resembles black hair. It's very nappy and is naturally in an afro. Does anyone know any method that I can use to acheive these dreads. I understand the people in the picture got theirs naturally by neglet, but I really don't want to wait that long. Is there any secret that the jamaican ladies in the flea market salons know that would do the trick? Thanks alot for the help.
Im the same, and it didnt take that long for mine to knot up. Just dont brush man. and what ever you do dont go to a salon. That would just take all the fun away and leave the destiny of you hair in the hands of a woman whos makes corn rows for a living.
its a form of neglect, but when washing ur hair, rub in circles(either clockwise or counter, just dont do both). it will get it nappy in no time... Check out MikeJH3Timeline...its got pics of my hair.
most of my dreads are fairly long, but i have 2 abnormly short dreads located at the bottom part of my head. I blame it on the curlyness of that part of my hair. I don't like perfectly sized and shaped dreads. It's close to impossible to have perfect dreads.
The way you dread Afro-American hair is different than Caucasian hair...so it depends on the texture of your hair.
mine are all random..i have some really thin ones some are rea lly fat..i dunno...it all depends on how your hair goes
thats just how they turn out when they're natural, most of those "jamaican ladies in the flea market salons" mostly try and get people to dread with wax/twisting because thats how they do it on black peoples hair, but those end up giving you the really thin, uniform ones natural is the best way to achieve what you want
not necassarily true. for instance...my first set of dreads were done with info i got from an african amrican person and they gave me the backcombing wax and twist technique and mine were beautiful and bob marley like..and i am as white as they come..lol...but yeah it all depends on what works best for u.
yeah, but a lot of times, they think non-black peoples hair NEEDS wax to lock properly, since simply twisting works on black hair types
oh.. haha. the only person i had tell me that was a white friend. i said "if you put mine in, no wax" and he said "MA, you're white.." haha
seems to me a lot of what went on in those pics is just regular dreading in the beginning. Once your dreads are well on their way, and you've settled into a routine for your head (how often you wash, etc) you can start into the whole "neglect" thing - basically just don't get all religious about palm-rolling and stuff. Dreads will naturally grow together where they want to and start jutting out at odd angles and stuff. I always laugh after I've fallen asleep with my dreads wet, because I wake up and they're all sticking out everywhere!
I know a lot of people like the uniform, clean look, but I'm more intrigued by the wild look myself. I wish my dreads were a little more crazy, but I guess when I sectioned them, I made them all pretty much the same size. Now, about 2 and 1/2 years later, if some of my dreads want to form together, I've given up on ripping them apart. I'm kinda hoping for some oddities and some nice congos. The best way to get the wilder hair is to just let your hair be. If you say you have nappy hair, then your hair will probably dread up naturally pretty quickly, so I'd suggest just leaving your hair be. You'll be more pleased with the result in the end
soo...your thinking their stupid?...i know a hell of alot about african american hair....what makes people think they know nothing about caucasian hair?
what would make you think that? the fact is that you can read countless posts on here or anywhere else about people with caucasian hair going to one of the more traditonal types of salons being told time and time again they need wax i personally know people that have had the same thing happen, its nothing to do with being 'stupid'(not sure why you'd even infer that in the first place). its just that the more traditional types of 'salons' deal in an almost complete majority with non-caucasian customers, simply for the fact that they're a traditionally black salon.
wax kept mine from locking, once i washed it all out and let them do their own thing they really really started to knot............ and i started with straigh fine hair
