whew...okay..here is the situation. as long as I can remember I have always been a picky eater. I mean PICKY!!!! to tell you the truth I pretty much eat junk food. The thing is I am an avid "hippie" beliving in good moral principles for humans and animals alike! but I tried and my diet can't seem to stable itself without meat. My parents also have a huge say in that it's "ridiculous" and playing the "one person doesn't make a differnce" card. I just need help! I've tried eating more greens and vegetables but I seriously have like some food aversion like I gag and shit! I feel terrible not to mention the depression that's holdin me down, anybody got any ideas? thanks! -Yours
It is not what goes into your mouth that defiles you, it is what comes out of it. I was vegan for 10 years, during which I had insatiable cravings for chocolate, probably from lack of saturated fats. The result was that I put on loads of weight over those 10 years. What I learned was that you must listen to your body. It knows what it needs intuitively, and sends the signals to you via cravings or aversions. The thing about food is that no matter how you look at it, we end up taking the life-force out of another living thing so as to live ourselves, and the question always hangs over us ~ is killing a plant any different to killing an animal? Killing is killing, that's the bottom line. So if you don't want to kill, eat only that which has died naturally. Then see how appetising meals are, vegetarian or not!! If you are doing it for spiritual reasons, then you need to remember ~ that which created us, created us with a dietary appetite that perfectly suits our human needs, and such a divine creative force should not be counter-intellectualized. It is not what goes into your mouth that defiles you, it is what comes out of it.
look at the "list of vegan grub" thread i just posted...there's quite a bit of junk food on there...if that's gonna be the thing to help you. I've always been a picky eater too...just figure out if you're craving sugary foods or salty foods...and there are always healthy alternatives. Yes, one person does make a difference. I've read that one vegetarian saves well over 100 animals' lives a year.
I think the figure was 80-something. Either way, yes, one person does make a difference. It was one person that shot the President, one person that cast the breaking vote to make English the official language of the United States instead of German, and also one person who declared war on Iraq. And that last guy is a complete and utter moron. (Disclaimer: I am not condoning shooting the President, if that's what you gathered.) (Edit: Ah, what the hell, I am condoning shooting the President. But just the current one. Not necessarily any of the ones that were already shot.)
dude, i totally feel you. i, too am a very picky eater... but alas! i've been a vegetarian for about 3.5 years now. i had to make myself like vegetables. play around with recipes, i douse everything in garlic usually, hehe. just keep on trying new things, eventually youll find something youll like! good luck
makes a big difference to your health/and spirit!!! how much it tips the balance of good over evil in the big scheme, you cant really say since people are always going veg and leaving veg and things are always changing.. but its still not a strong argument NOT to do it and do what you can, specially when its so easy and gives you such a good moral feeling. as to the dude who said killing is killing, bottom line... not true at all i dont think. in my experience and opinion, plants are infinitley wiser than many animals and take death riiiiight in stride. many plants dont have to be killed to be eaten either(fruits, fruiting vegetables, nuts) and many plants die regardless in season. it makes a WORLD of difference to eat foods with pure living life force and enzymes in them as opposed to dead and cooked food. btw, dark chocolate can not only be vegan and delicious, but has some healthy properties in it as well. balances brain chemicals and has antioxidants in it, the darker the choc. the better. the darker the choc the worse the taste(something not consistent with healthy foods normally at alll imo), but even the weak dark choc. is a lot better than a lot of the other so called food many people eat.
Some vegans eat a lot of fresh vegetables. Some vegans don't really like vegetables much, myself included! But it's still feasible. Try out some recipes, if you are good at cooking, or get some veg meals at the store to try out. Do you like beans? What about a bean burrito with salsa and corn? That has all the essential amino acids plus vegetables and it's yummy as well. Or soy cheese pizza. There are probably SOME veggies you like, maybe basil or mushrooms/tomatos and you can sneak a little on top on the pizza so you'll barely taste it. I'm sorry about your depression. Have you seen anyone about it? Medicine can help a lot. But also, starting to eat healthier will also give you energy and will make you feel a bit better. Good luck with everything!
i agree, eating healthier may help you to feel better and Hikaru Zero, off topic, but the US doesnt have an official language..
i agree with you, one person can make big difference, especially in question of saving animal lives by cutting down on meat consumption but 3littlebirds is right, there is no official usa language http://www.lifeintheusa.com/landhistory/official.htm and that story about language-voting is legend http://www.watzmann.net/scg/german-by-one-vote.html
What you need to do is start trying new things. I'm serious. When I first became vegetarian I had the same problem. I was SCARED to try new things. But now I eat a wider variety of food (and it's all healthy) than I ever would have if I still ate meat. Maybe have someone blindfold you and tell them to describe the food you are about to taste without telling you what it is. . . sometimes the names of things sound gross. . like SQUASH.. that used to frighten me. . . but now, I love it. I hope this has helped you a little. . .
So what do you like? where can you add good foods? Like salsa? cover new stuff in decreasing amounts until you develop a taste for them. Alas, this is not working on brussel sprouts. ;P barbecue sauce, but watch the sugar amounts and as Kettle said GARLIC!!!!!!
