I just got this schoolbus. its an 88 GMC with a rebuilt diesel engine. it has new tires, new batteries, new AC unit, 2 generators, hitch, 4 fold up bunks, fridge , microwave, fresh water tank, 12v water pump, portable shower and bathroom, jammin stereo system.

its going to be my home starting next year, and for many many years after that. I'm going to travel for a bit then take it down to a commune to start organic farming.

im going to fix up the interior for the next year, im so excited.

thats cool, i used to have a VW bus too, but i had to sell it to pay my lawyer.

i can understand the appeal of the bus...youve got room enough to actually live in it if you so desire. a van might be good for trips, but not long term living.

but why do you guys like the vw vans? the obvious answer is the image. i'm just really curious why so many self-proclaimed "hippies" and people who are sympathetic to many of the same beliefs (though not necessarily "hippies" themselves) have this fascination with those damn buses. they look kinda cool, but nothing more spectacular than other modes of transportation. and the gas milage is supposed to be among the worst possible, especially when you have no legitimate need for a big vehicle and thus are carrying around a lot of useless weight.

it seems the neo-hippies and various offshoots of the hippy era who often are quite similar to hippies in many regards is more interested in the past than in the future. there are certain things that didnt work right from the getgo, like entirely dropping out of society. its been made clear that its not a very good option for the vast majority of people. similar to unprotected sex with many partners, we've learned it just doesnt work well. same with those damn vans....we're currently in an environmental crisis that we've been warned of, and its only getting worse...and yet so many "hippies" like vans and buses and such.

i'm just curious what the reasoning is? this is not intended to bash or insult anybody, i'm just really interested in hearing a reasonable response to such issues, and i'm fully confident that wonka and others are intelligent enough to give one.

i totally understand the iconic appeal, the image, and the fact that its something cool that not everyone can have, especially if its in good shape.

but does that outweigh a more fuel efficient vehicle's benefits?

and how, if one lives in a bus, is one to find employment gainful enough to fuel said bus for one year, while on the road?

do tell...i'm interested in your plan. it sounds like it could be a lot of fun. good luck!

You have to take into consideration how many people it can carry going from hippy fest to hippy fest. Depending on the number of passengers (thereby saving additional cars on the road) the equivalent of 100+ miles per gallon is realized :)

Now as a daily driver...... different story.

There are a few reasons I want one. For one, they are big enough to live in when i go camping for a few days, which i love to do. Number two, I know nothing about car mechanics, and i want to learn. The old VW buses, and bugs have the most basic, easiest engines ever made to work on. My dad knew a guy who had never been under a hood in his life, his beatle broke down, so he bought a book, took it apart and fixed it in a weekend. It is also a fun hangout thing. You can chill with a bunch of friends in their, relax and blaze. Finally, i wanted somthing that i could do a lot to the interior of. I am planning on putting in a tv, couch, and beanbag chair in there. That is why they are hippie assosiated, is because it is a cool car to just chill in. And also, the gas is not nearly as bad as you say it is. They get around 25 which is the same, if not better then current vehicals comprible in size.

From the time I was 8 until the time I was about 14 I wanted to live in one so damn bad. Because we had a friend that stopped by ever once in awhile and had like a full blown decked-out house, in a bus. Then I realized it would be so much uptake. Those older buses start to fall apart, not to mention you have to find a spot to park them everynight. That and the gas milage did it in for me.

Haha, that's cool as hell, Wonka. Looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you, but it'll totally be worth it once you have it up and running.

thats pretty much the reason i had one... ive always loved they way they look... and to me it did outweight the lack of fule efficiency.

this bus is diesel, it runs on veggie oil. veggie oil is free. in a worst case senirio, i have no money, and no fule, it will be parked, odd jobs will be done and desiel fule will be purchaced till i can find more veggie oil.

once i get on the commune i will be making some ammount of money. untill then i have alot of savings. and a car worth 14,000 blue book.

it runs great! as you can see its been renovated. the engine has been rebuilt and there have been alot of upgrades to the bus as a whole. only thing it needs is interior work.
