    Hello,

since a few weeks I have a spider web in front of my window. On good days it's about one metre in diametre, roughly the size of the windows pane. The fscking huge spider comes out at dusk and crawls back into his hiding-place at dawn. This morning I saw him catching a big moth and hauling it into the hiding-place. He is fast, it only took a few minutes to get the moth out of the web. Now it's dark outside and he is not in his lurking position. Maybe he is still full from his breakfast ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

    Hello,

same here. Wind and heavy rain destroyed the web a few times. But he is a laborius spider and repaired it every time.

    Regards
    Gyro

    Hello,

nope, but I'm glad you asked ;). There are two problems (at least). First, and I might be very wrong here, but do male spiders build webs? My gut feeling says they don't. That's why the title of the thread says Mrs. Spider. The second problem is English grammar ;). If people speak about animals in general they often use the male pronoun. Ex.: the cat, he is meowing. In my native language it would be 'it is meowing'. So I'm just confused ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

    Hello,

hm, I just learned that some male spiders build webs only until they reach sexual maturity. So I guess it depends on the species.

spiders themselves are fine, but their presence is an indication of the presence of their prey. time to keep everything really clean and stirilized for a while to prevent colonization by ants and the like.
hard as they are to prevent, its easier then getting rid of them once they're established. but be nice to the spiders, thy're there to catch other bugs, mostly flying ones.
also you can tease them to make it rain.

if he's about a meter across, a moth won't fill him up. maybe he's on a diet so he can get down to a yard.

What kind of hiding place does it have? I always assume they live in their webs.

    Hello,

directly above the window is the gutter. I think he hides somewhere below it or in cracks in the wall. This morning the web was mostly destroyed. Maybe he has become the lunch for some bird ;).
