I Love this guy. Doesn't get any better than this.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!!:

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails.

    Took away their weights.

Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.
When the inmates complained, he told them.....this is a good one......"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

    More on the AZ Sheriff.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports:

About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates:

"It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes .
. . so shut your damned mouths."

Dude sounds like a dick, though I don't have a real big problem with most of his policies.

But that just reveals him to be a dumbass as well. Though I suppose there's a punishment element in having to watch Newt Gingrich's lecture series.

The one fundamental problem I have with this is that there are probably some people serving time in this prison for a petty crime such as personal marijuana consumption perhaps even for medicinal purposes, yet you know that the Enron chiefs who robbed 1000's of people of their retirement savings get to do their time at a country club.

Oh and by the way West Point - I'm a bit surprised. I had figured Rush Limbuagh was your hero.

People that get caught for petty things dont have to deal with it as long. Rush and 90% of those talk show hosts are too far right for me.

Medicinal or not marijuana is still breaking the law and they dont deserve porno or tobacco use in jail and they should be in chain gangs. Rush has some good ideas and some bad ideas and yes he is extremely far right but I enjoy listening to him because his ideas are so extreme.

but no coffee...what they hell. it has caffeine, the best endurance drug out there if used properly. if sheriff wanted to maximize the work the inmates do, then he would allow coffee and properly hydrate the inmates. just makes sense if you want more work done.

OK then why do the 'white collar' criminals get to go to country club prisons then? People like the Enron chiefs aren't going to see near the punishment and loss of freedom that these people are seeing and their crimes ruined the futures of 1000's. Where's the JUSTICE in that?

you misread my statement, i said
. maybe its worded wrong. if it is, my bad, i meant to say if he allows them to have the coffee and then gives them proper hydration throughout the day, the caffeine will help the inmates work longer as it will be used for endurance. i know caffeine dehydrates you. sorry for the miswording.

America holds more prisoners than any other nation on earth, according to a British Home Office study. The sky-high incarceration rates do little to reduce crime (as America's high crime rates show), all it does is throw enormous numbers of poor people into jails (what is now becoming known as the "Prison-Industrial system because of the industry growing around it).

    Danip, that's fucking stupid.

    Why is marijuana illegal?

Does it kill you? No more than a thousand legal products. Does my smoking a joint hurt ANYBODY ELSE? No. Does it threaten national security? Or maybe insite riot? Does it molest children? No, no and no.

Every other industrialized nation is on the path to decriminalization, if they're not already there. Yet the US government is still cracking down with full force on hemp seed granola bars (hemp seeds, by the way, being one of the healthiest foods known to man).

Just another example of how ass-backwards your country is.

i had read up on some of those tent cities when my ex ended up in one. usually the majority are participants in the more violent crimes, though as these are gaining in popularity, i don't know that that is true any longer. but it's a good idea, reduce recidivism by making it fucking miserable. if you're stupid enough to get caught with drugs, you won't be so stupid again. driving while intoxicated on pot is just as bad as being intoxicated with alcohol. youcan't drive wth an open container of alcohol in your car, i imagine you can't drive anywhere with pot handy, either.

Our jail system does help to prevent crime, but it is way to nice to have the effect that we would like it to have. Why is pot illegal? Because of the drastic effects it has on your brain.

That is cruel and unusual punishment. I saw a special on these prisons on TV. Pregnant womyn are incarcerated in them, many of them dehydrate and have nausea and high blood pressure issues IGNORED by this fuckwad sheriff and his redneck staff, or whatever he is. One womyn's baby died when she went into labor in 130 degree heat and wasn't beleived by the guards. (She was still working on the chain gang while pregnant.) Most womyn who are in prison are there due to drug dealing boyfriends, or the few who actually commited "violent crimes" from commiting crimes against abusive partners. Not quite right to put pregnant womyn in situations like this.

How does making someone wear pink underwear help the prison system. If everyone in prison was a violent offender, this would be different, but many of these people are not.

Rush would have said to give them the cigarettes. It would shorten the lives of the prisoners, which means less money to spend on them. Plus the tobacco industry would make a bigger profit.

Alcohol has drastic effects on the brain, even more so than pot. Yet, there is no push to make alcohol illegal. People don't even consider alcohol a drug. How many times have we heard the expression 'Drugs and Alcohol'? That's like saying 'fruit and apples'.

To be consistent, we would have to make pot legal but make it a crime to drive while intoxicated with pot. Or, we would have to make make alcohol illegal like pot. There aren't really any other choices if we want to be consistent.

What effect are you looking for, hardening criminals into even more twisted people? Although I would cut down on some prison luxuries as well, just for real violent and nasty criminals. But it doesn't have to be complete hell (a Newt Gingrich lecture series is just inhumane:p).

 Oh man don't get me started. That is 100% bullshit and you either know it or you're another misinformed subscriber to DARE and other failed drug war propagandist programs.

I smoke pot on a fairly frequent basis, often every weekend or every other, though of late I've smoked more, it being a lazy summer and all, and I've smoked for a couple years now. I graduated high school 5th in my class with a 3.9 GPA, and am attending college with a 4-year scholarship. So I guess those "drastic effects" have been worked out smoothly enough.
