Who says it's meaningless? Just because there is no god doesn't mean life is meaningless. We still create memories, legacies, families, history, we carry on our genes, we carry on our ideals, our culture, our science...I could go on and on. It is a major misconception that just because there is no god there is no meaning to life. Not that I personally am an athiest, I don't dismiss the possibility of a god.
thats not necessarily true... but as far as were concerned what we do as humans really doesnt have much significance in the scheme of things. thats one of the reasons psychedelics are bad - they bring you to this painful realization and force you to live the rest of your life knowing that humans are a bunch of fucking idiots, and youre one of them. my advice to anyone facing this problem is to live fast and seek immediate gratification! its the only way to get past it
You're born, you live, you die, you decay. That's it. Where's the meaning in that? If there is any meaning at all then it's temporary and illusory.
there could be a meaning, but maybe we just dont know what it is. why do we think we need one so bad anyway?
I don't think we need one. It just can get a little depressing knowing that this is it, this is all there is. Oh well, life is fun regardless.
you give athiests the bad reputation they have for being depressed and pessemistic. i agree that there is no predestined meaning to our existence, but that doesn't mean life isn't worth living, and that we can't create some purpose in our own lives. i live because i enjoy life, and i think my purpose is to touch other people's lives in my own way. just because i don't believe in god or fate doesn't mean that i think life is meaningless.
cold hearted world...... its not all meaning less...then again i dont belioeve in god or any of that. I just believe in life, birth, blood, doom, the hole in the ground is coming round soon.
Heh heh, 42. Meaning is overrated. We look for a "bigger picture" when there isn't one. The great thing, tho, is that we assign meaning to our lives, which, when ya think bout it, is alot better than having meaning given to us by some faceless over-being.
I agree that meaning is overrated, and sometimes the time spent in pursuit of the meaning of certain things is a pointless exercise and a frustrating waste of time and energy. I don't know what the meaning of many of my paranormal experiences is, yet I will not let the wish to know the answer take over my life. I will just carry on with the here and now priorities, and keep one eye open for more little clues that could help me learn more as to the meanings. If one focusses too much on theoretical concepts, it is easy to lose sight of the joy of the present, and miss out on life's gift. Just keep aware of the finite quality of this life, and do not use up all your time trying to learn answers that you may very well be either unable to know, or that once you learn them, will not in any tangible way improve your life. Of course, that is just my view, and I could be dead wrong. Its just my way of doing things that works for me.
You don't look for it, it's in your face but you cannot perceive it until you have been properly prepared. First with the sensations of the body, than with descriptions of these sensations, then with the adding of necessity.... It is brought to you, including the sense of pursuit.
Freaky joe Agree with Kharakov But not for his reasons..which are personal/religious.. You cannot possibly be saying that humanity has the best understanding of reality in THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. That our 'picture' is complete.. That bigger picture is the 98% of EVERYTHING that we have no understanding of. And in that 98%..there may well be the answers to meaning that humans look for. Your comment is similar to the scientific establishment BEFORE einstein came along and handed them a picture. Occam
Mr MiGu This is the most perceptive comment occam has heard on this thread. Lets say..That 'direction' sets up existant reality [tills the field] To result in 'selfaware beings' For one reason only...so we can WORK OUT how we got here.. And if we do that...[find the cause] 'Direction' might say "Thank myself...someone to talk to at last" Occam
