My father, the police officer.

So the past two nights my dad has noticed the smell of weed from me. This morning he woke me up with a drug test in his hand. I've been caught twice before, the first time by my parents, the second time by a cop. Both times my dad and mom went insane thinking that they had failed me. My dad was literally raised to hate pot and all other drugs, and he turned that hate into a career and now he's in SNU (street narcotics unit) Obviously this morning I dropped dirty and once again he went through his whole "You make me sick" speech. My question is, how can I show my dad that marijuana isn't what he thinks it is? If i showed him any studies showing that cannabis isn't as bad as he thinks it is he'd just be like "Oh well that's some bullshit, that's a lie, that study was funded by some liberals blah blah blah" when really, he's the one with a head full of lies. How can I show him? How can I get through his hard head? Is there anything I can do at all?

 

wow, sounds like a super shitty situation. not sure there is any good way around this. you'll just have to wait it out until you can move out of the house i suppose. granted i know i have no right to shit on your father, but cops aren't the most open, receptive or intelligent people in the world. hence why their profession is: "enforce the law regardless of what it is, never question it. leave the questioning to smarter people (i.e. judges)."

the best thing i guess you could say to him is, "why is marijuana illegal?" and when he responds, "blah blah it lowers your IQ, it makes you useless, it wastes your brain away, it causes cancer, it ruins your life, etc." you just respond, "show me unbiased, peer-reviewed scientific evidence of that." demand proof of causation, not correlation (any stupid statistician can do a study about correlation). be persistent.

 

just tell him it doesnt change you. but i dont he will ever even listen. its illegal and all, ya know?

good luck. you may want to try showing him certain websites like www.norml.org or www.leap.cc. LEAP is a anti drug war group of former and current judges, attorneys, and pigs of all shapes and sizes.

lol i'm familiar with LEAP and am a supporter of NORML, I talked with him more, showed him studies, i just don't think its possible. He wants to believe its a harmful thing, and i just can't stop it. Guess i'll just try to get a good paying job and move out asap. and no i'm not killing him because we have opposing views on weed. i'm a peaceful hippie, dicks.

Do you know if he is pissed at the fact that you are smoking, or if it is that you are using an illegal substance while he is still responsible for you?

unfortunately this is not easy for two reasons

1) when people want to believe something, changing their mind becomes all the more difficult, and is generally an impossible task.

2) he is a cop, he has been raised to hate drugs as you said. It's going to mad hard to try to proove to him that its not that bad...the best way would be to get him to try it for himself. And I doubt that would ever happen....and even if it did, he could be the type to hate it slash he will have a lot of pre-conceived notions about it which would affect his experience.

my dad smoked among many other things back in the day. but i still get lectures. I knew i had strict parents so i didnt start smokin hard core till after I moved out...perhaps it is like Donnyw said: cuz your in his house...and under his supervision still... but then if hes in that unit, hed prolly be upset either way

Normally I try to be optimistic in this situation, but judging by your post, you're fucked. Either don't smoke in your house or don't smoke until you move out.

Trying to convince a narc that weed is alright is like trying to convince a devout Christian that god doesn't exist.
