Muticulturalism is dead, say academics Multiculturalism has failed in Britain because people refuse to move out of the 'comfort zone' of their own community, academics warned. The study said the controversial Left-wing doctrine had ignored the dangers of 'religious fundamentalism' and should be scrapped. Communities should instead be actively encouraged to mix. The report, written by a team from University of Leicester, said this should be backed by a new concept of 'Britishness'. It would be based upon respect for the Monarchy, loyalty to the elected Government, and respect and adherence to the law. The authors said multiculturalism was 'dead'. It had failed, they said, because people were not willing to leave their own 'comfort zones'. It left communities living separately from one another in virtual isolation, 'co-existing with parallel lives'. Asaf Hussain, co-author of the work, said: "We believe multiculturalism has failed. It was a concept and a social re-engineering policy with the best of intentions, but with little debate at the grass roots. "It failed to recognise or ignored the dangers of religious fundamentalism with deadly consequences. It was yesterday's message conveyed by yesterday's men and women. "Multicultural policies saved no lives in London. The ones who died and were injured through the terrorist actions of British-born terrorists in July 2005 came from all countries, cultures and religions. Britain's population has to become integrated." The doctrine of multicultarism, which dates back almost 50 years, dictates that different communities should not be forced to integrate. Instead, they are allowed to maintain their own culture and identities. But in recent years it has come under attack for encouraging 'separateness', or ghettoes in which communities such as Muslims live in almost complete isolation. Critics have said this was true of Dewsbury, in Leeds - where July 7 bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer originate from. The report, Engagement With Cultures: From Diversity To Interculturism, calls for communities to be encouraged to mix. It tested the idea with an exhibition organised by Pakistani women was held in a predominantly Indian neighbourhood, an Indian musical was staged in a 100 per cent white working men's club, and a children's show was put on by predominantly white schoolchildren at a multi-ethnic school in another part of the city. The events were a hit, the researchers said, and showed people just needed encouragement to build bridges between communities. Recommendations made by the report included placing citizenship on the national curriculum and removing the link between country and religion, such as British Muslim. This should be replaced with British Indian or British Pakistani, the report found. Race relations expert Professor John Benyon, of the University of Leicester, said: "There are important lessons from this publication that are applicable across the country. "Rather than adopting knee-jerk reactions in terms of legislation, I feel the Government should be taking a more considered approach, such as establishing a standing commission on the inter-cultural society, which could take evidence on the best way of removing underlying causes of conflict." Last year, Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, warned that many cities are ' sleepwalking to segregation'. The official reports into the Bradford and Oldham riots of 2001 said communities were leading 'parallel lives'. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=394566&in_page_id=1770
Multiculturism can't actually be legislated. It has to happen through the natural osmosis of people working and living together. Struggling and striving to make better lives for their families. Here in the states we tried what they called "Title 7", from the looks of the immigration battles in congress right now it was a total waste. Assimilation happens when people have to come together to live and work. When the government tries to allow for and promote seperation or culture uniqueness, the whole thing falls apart. Culture and faith should be taught in the home, Government should butt out. Legislations only role should be to outlaw discrimination based on race, culture, religion or anything else that may be deemed discriminatory, such as sexual orientation. The common man will in his efforts to benefit his family and social status assimilate in a modern society, if given half a chance.
What happened here in the States with Title VII was we hired teachers to now teach Spanish speaking students in Spanish. What happened? These students who had previously been mainstreamed in the normal classrooms, now had classrooms of their own, where everyone spoke Spanish. It lead to them being even more separate from the main student body. They demanded more rights and support instead of assimilating with the country they had moved to, what was accomplished? Especially in our high schools, where clicks are the way of life the Spanish speaking migrant kids became a separate segment of the population. Was that good?
Girls don't play football because the boys/society doesn't let them. Many girls are good at it and would love to play if given half a chance. Here in the States we have mixed soccer teams, and a lot of the time the girls are better than a lot of the boys. They don't seem to go through that growth stage where their feet become awkward.
For those who don't know better multiculturalism is sometimes (as in this case) used as a buzzword for miscegenation. This isn't about elitist or pride or anarchism. Just good ol fashioned far-far-right racism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miscegenation
Well until about 20 years ago, part of the aliegence to the UK was a deference to the Church of England too but in a concession to the muslim community it appears to have gone from the agenda. Not that it is a bad thing, however I note that nothing replaced it and a complete secularisation should infact take place within Britain in my opinion,to the effect that part of what it means to be British is to advocate the separation of religion and politics to the extent that no politician shall owe an alliegance to any god or faith and furthermore all state schools shall be non faith based. I do not see why I should pay for some kid to learn about god when I do not believe the existence of god course they were a hit ! What mom would not turn up to her kids night on stage. Also have you seen those areas, its probably the only entertainment they got there that year other than the pub or the social centre to play bingo Well he would say that ! I mean establishing a commission, great hey everyone lets get together in love and harmony as at last theyve established a commission to keep toffs running it in the money I said it in another thread, but the only way multiculturalism died in this country is because of muslims ranting on about how bad they feel in this country, forgetting the country their grandparents and great grandparents came from are still as piss poor as when they left the places. I was a very broadminded and open liberal (not the political party - but liberal of mind - progressive) with tendencies toward demonstrating against legislation that would harm racial relations, but of late I am afraid that others of my generation have seen our actions as folly and we have been looked upon, rather than with support, as mugs by the very people we tried to help. I have had it with this issue and now join those who arent in opposition to better relations but are very much more guarded and unwilling to commit to that cause anymore (it is not that I am against it because I am not for it, I am neutral)
Hey until Bush came into power there was a distinct separation of church and state, but he caused the population to feel that the church would take on government burdens, and in doing that he muddied the waters. Now no one knows where church ends and state starts. He's funded the churches he feels worthwhile and overlooked those he doesn't agree with. But the US public was blinded and just want to see those 10 commandments, hey those may be rewritten by the republicans if you aren't careful. They all felt he was talking about their churches, but guess what???? Sorry Columbo, I know you are speaking of the Uk, and I am speaking of the US, but lately they've been joined at the hip.
Too true. I just dont know anymore where U.S politics ends and UK politics begin and visa-versa. I dont even bother writing "The UK" or "The U.S" or Australia anymore etc etc etc because the west is the west now and has a kind of uniformed politics where we all have the same laws, more-or-less, and the same kind of state
I just assume everyone from the west knows what I am going on about, and guesses the situation as its not hard to guess anymore. I remember when there used to be vast differences but thats changing - ha! now thats globalisation ! I didnt realise Bush had started re-investing (litteraly) the church with powers? Thats crazy. Here they are allowing faith schools to re-emerge in a stupid way, so it will segregate more than it will unite. Its insanity
multiculturalism when in rome do as the romans do if your ways and your home country are so good, why may i ask are you here? accepting people and the society you live in is a two way street. if something is so good why are we always being told that its good? some things to ponder. i wouldn't worry about it too much western civillisation is disappearing, so given another couple of decades.
Well, having lived in one of the most "multi-cultural" places in my country (NYC), I can tell you that you can't force it, or define it. Black people are different from white people who are different from Indians, who are different from Japanese, who are different from the Dutch who are different from Italians. Once you can accept the we are all DIFFERENT and live with that, this whole "multi-culturalism" thing will vanish anyway. Everyone is NOT the same. Everyone is NOT equal. Some cultures excel at some things, other cultures excel at other things. Notice I did not say "races" anywhere. If you've every lived in Manhattan, you'd see this in action. All cultures there accept the others, but the key to that is to take it all lightly and acknowledge the DIFFERENCES between cultures. Joke about them. Laugh at them. Relax.
Cultures have nothing to do with excelling, i am sure what you are talking about is in race, probably something like black people being good at sports etc. Culture just implies to live in a similar fashion to a certain group of people. You say that people accept others but that doesnt mean they are comfortable with others from different cultures. Everyone sticks to their own race basically, and there is still a great tension between different races.
Multiculturalism is the future, it's polyculturalism that may be the problem. Yes, it is a problem when communities fail to integrate well, and the blame for that must be laid both at the feet of the immigrants and of the host country. But the world is getting smaller, travel easier, communication more readily available. Cultures may mix slowly, there may be set backs along the way, but multiculturalism is an inevitability. Every mixed race person out there is a testament to that. Britain has always been an island of immigrants, and even if it took centuries, the formation of a single society was the result of Norman, Roman, Viking and Angle, Saxon and Jute immigration. It's a melting pot, and though at times the different ingredients may seperate out, eventually they cannot fail to mix. And it's easy to forget about the more subtle influences when concentrating only on the political. Britain's favourite dish is now Chicken Tikka Massala. Even fish and chips were brought over by Jewish immigrants from Europe. And some cultures, Jews and Sikhs for example, have been extremely successful in the way that they have integrated into British society. So reports of multiculturalism's death have been greatly exaggerated! And when it's the Daily Mail publishing this (one of the most vile right-wing anti-immigrant papers in Britain) that's no surprise....
multiculturalism was a great tool for invasion , actually Id like someone to explain to me what the difference between a invasion where you have a army bringing settlers who intend changing the way of life and laws of a country, and what has happened with multiculturalism . a couple of days ago you had a government minister being told to get out of a muslim area in the uk, that he was the enemy ,it doesnt take much to move from that to barricades and no go areas , I see the balkanisation of the uk and a situation like that which existed in lebanon or northern Ireland . and I think peace you are mistaking race with culture, racially I agree with you I dont think we are going to have a race civil war ,people are getting more mixed racially . but cultures dont just peacefully meld you have wars and genocides if two groups of people want different things on the same piece of land . and when you talk about anglo saxons vikings and jutes and whatever dont forget the warfare . add to this we have iran and egypt getting nukes a radicalisation across the islamic world for some reason we think things are going to get better more liberal but that doesnt seem to be the way things are going . you have in history a constant war against the rest of the world in jihad you have two great waves of islamic expansion that destroyed half of what was the christian world the last wave ended in the 17th century in the siege of vienna . I would advise anyone who can to try to understand this history , a good film that you may find it differcult to see is islam what the world needs to know , there are also books on the subject
Does your nephew then know nothing of Chinese culture? Is he totally British, or is he mixed culturally as well as mixed race? Either way, I never said there wouldn't be problems along the way, but what I would say is that in the future, I think cultures will be mixing much more readily and with much fewer conflicts....
I hate it when people base their concept on the world on who may or may not get "nukes". Sh*t we are right back in the coldwar mentality. Who the hell cares. What matters is making people mad enough to want to wipe another country off the map...but that doesn't seem to hit a note with people. The US has now managed to alienate the whole Muslim culture. Israel, Pakistan and India have had "nukes" for years why aren't they included in the "axis of evil". The whole thing is contrived for corporate and political reasons. We should be questioning those before we start seeing a boogie man on every corner. Nuclear power generation can free resources and help modernize nations, why should any nation that wishes to develop this sort of thing be seen by the western world as a threat. Israel, Pakistan and India have bomb capabilities. Maybe that's why the US refuses to enter Pakistan to retrieve Bin Laden and Armitage threatened to bomb them back to the stoneage, and Indian tranportation was bombed and Israel was given a pass on their attack on Lebanon.
do you need to do something to make people want to kill you, is it possible just possible that someone in the world apart from bush and blair might have a agenda . I know this may be hard for you to understand but some people take religion seriously. and if they believe that it is a commandment of god to fight people who dont believe in allah and his prophet until either they do, or they are in a secondclass position to muslims. whatever bush or blair do or isreal does wont make a damns worth of difference . see the film islam what the west needs to know, there are many books on the subject I have explained the subject on this site for about 5 years but that film will do a better job than me if you can spare a hour out of your life to watch it . basically you have a thing called abrogation which means that the last sura revealed is the one that is inforce today. the last koranic sura was the verse of the sword that makes it a commandment to fight until the worship of allah is supreme and non muslims are either converted or pay protection money and live as secondclass citizens in islamic states . you have a history of continous jihad thats religious war against non muslim, not just christians but buddhist hindus you name it for 1400 years. this war has not stopped ever, it has had periods where it has slown down but these are just when muslims are to weak to be able to persue jihad . The last high point of jihad came in the 17th century with a islamic army fighting a battle and being beaten at the gates of vienna on September 11, 1683 interesting date that isnt it anyway you seem to understand that western people could have plan to fight wars what makes you think that the wests main ideological competitor in history wont try for a re match
So what. Remember the crusades? You are assuming that muslims are united in some cause, when they aren't. Most of the violence initiated by muslims in this world is directed at other muslims.
Drifterz, i see where you're coming from and i often agree-- being P.C. kinda causes more problems than solves them at times. i think there's a difference, though, in calling me a cracker as a joke and calling me a cracker as an insult. still, multiculturalism is a positive movement, so if only people could just try not to take racial slurs so seriously or treat others like crap for being different then i'd say you had a great and valid point. i gotta say though, you should clarify that you don't mean that NYC doesn't have race problems cuz it most definitely does. though L.A. may be the worst city in that respect. just my two cents..
