moving to northern california need advice

where in northern california would we most likely be able to make a living?
my boyfriend has family in napa and we want to drive our son out there and try to make a life were definantly willing to stay in a shelter but were looking for one that could help us get into housing like here in ohio or even a commune,any advice that will be beneficial to us i would appreciate were a young couple with a 1 year old
