    Hey there,
I'm a 25/m currently living in Santa Fe, NM. I'm looking into moving to Austin this coming fall to pursue a career in Audio Engineering. I would like to meet some cool people and make some connections before I actually go.
I got a few questions too..

Is it hard to find a reasonable apartment that allows dogs?

I have a VW bus, but my license is currently revoked... is it easy to get around using a bicycle/public transportation?

Is it hard to find a job?

Anyways, it's a bit intimidating moving to a new place where I don't know anybody by myself..... looking to meet some people to plug me into the scene, see music with, play disc golf, etc....

    thanks!

    Keith

    Hey Keith :)
I'm pretty new to Austin & you'll be happy to know that it's the greatest place...EVER , lol. I'm sure you'll love it here ! I've had no problems making new friends...it's a great laid back city .As long as you live in Austin & not on the out skirts , you'll have no problems getting around. As far as dogs...a lot of Apt.s dont have problems accepting them , you just have to be willing to put a decent deposit...like $500. But some of them even have gated yards connected to the Units. Well , Stay in touch...I'm here if ya need :)

I've lived here in atx for quite a while now, and I agree with balance, it is the greatest city ever. It has a flavor to it that no other city has....as they say here, "keep austin weird". Real estate here is actually really pricey compared to a lot of other places. For pets, pretty much every single place will require you to pay a deposit, but finding a place that allows pets isn't hard at all, they're everywhere. atx has a big city bus system, so it's not hard to get around town at all, but, like balance said, the closer you are to central austin, the better. They also have special lanes on almost all busy roads specifically for bicyclists, so if you wanted to ride a bike, there shouldn't be any problems. The only thing about riding bikes here in atx is that it's really, really hilly here, so, you'll be getting to ride uphill a lot....it gets special after a few hills, believe me.....if you need a connection, my cuz sells to ppl, just tell me if you need something....

I gotta agree that Austin is one of the best cities I've lived in. Even though I have some bad memories due to some people I trusted there, it is definitely one of the most welcoming cities I have been to.
Capital Metro isn't always that wide a service but it is usually pretty easy to get from most places to downtown.
I would watch out for cycling along some of the roads - 360 for example has seen some nasty bike crashes despite having wide shoulders.
The rental situation is ok, some of the rents are through the roof, but there are a lot of house shares with it being a university city and many rental places will accept dogs for a pet deposit.
As for bars/clubs and stuff there seems to be something for everyone from the high party places thru chilled bars down to depression drinking dives, buddhist and spiritual centres and plenty of movie theatres etc.
I would love to move back there sometime soon, and if you wanted to meet up sometime (if I manage to get back there) and tour the town (although I only spent just about a year there) then get in touch.
Also if I do move back there it will be on a small budget for the first month so if anyone knows a hook-up on a deposit free place then drop me a line.
