I'm a bass player and god know's I love guitarists but I have to say I'm tired of hearing who is overrated as a guitarist. So I humbly inqurie of you Who do you think is the most underrated guitarist and why? IMHO Larry LaLonde from Primus is an underrated guitarist. I think that his lines are technically brilliant but are overlooked because he is not afraid of dissonance and is standing next to an incredibly unique bassist. To me it's almost like Ornette Coleman. Ornette plays "out" so to alot of cat's he's just making noise but if you get close enough you hear the really brilliant lines. Peace Out, Rev J
so so many... john scofield comes to mind... john mclaughlin (miles davis, mahavishnu orchestra)... jimmy herring... drew heller (toubab krewe)... keller williams. i completely agree, though. i got tired of the 'omg jimi hendrix is the vast ever'-'jimmy page is god' threads. then again, i've been coming here since 2004 .
I just get tired guitarists bitching over they think are overrated. I used to play with a guitarist who was a Militant Phish Head and he thought that everybody but Trey was overrated. We had a personality conflict. Peace Out, Rev J
yeah, trey kinda falls into that. the guy is phenomenal... but can't be the best ever, since that doesn't exist. even with trey (who is way more accomplished at guitar than i am) there are certain things that i can do better. i just like seeing people get into it when they play... and lately, more often than not, trey has this indifferent look on his face. i think that means it is time to step aside
I know that towards the end of the run just before the hiatus he was on some really heavy dope which will also do it. But I really think Jimmy Herring is about the best on that scene. His album Lifeboat is fucking amazing. Peace Out, Rev J
true... just seems to me that he has hardly any time for phish, and would rather be doin' his whole TAB thing... who, interestingly enough, i could go see tonight, but $40 tickets and a place where you absolutely must sit down doesn't do it for me. and yes, herring is the shiznit... a cool recording is "funky bitch" from phish at the roxy 1993... herring comes on stage and plays with phish. he's the only guy (at least in that scene) i've heard that can go toe to toe with trey on the geetar.
It's interesting both Trey and Jimmy Herring did columns for Guitar World magazine. I think one of the best things Trey said in one of his columns was "Listen to your favorite album by your favorite artist 100 times in a row and see if you still like it. I tried this and I didn't." The video that went with Herrings first column is on youtube check it out. Peace Out, Rev J
indeed, herring is one of my favourites. just curious, have you ever herd of 'toubab krewe'? if you haven't, check em out. they blend american roots music, surf rock, and west african stylings into quite a heady brew. their guitarist is one of the guys i mentioned... imo he has a most unique style. they really should be getting bigger than they are... then again, i'm not hurt that this isn't happening. i enjoy intimate shows and cheap tickets
Dude I've kind of been digging on the Motet lately. I heard them do a balls out cover of Nothing but Flowers by the Talking Heads. Peace Out, Rev J
toubab krewe sound interesting. My main complaint about Trey as a guitarist is his playing lacks balls. I also have that same complaint about Pat Metheny. I watched one of the Best of the Jammys discs and there was a 3 guitar jam with Trey, Warren Haynes, and Derek Trucks and to be honest I was more impressed by Warren and Derek. If you get a chance Check out the disk Visions of an Emerald Apocolypse. It's an all star tribute to Mahavishnu. Warren Haynes does a track and Jimmy Herring does a track (sadly they don't do one together). Peace Out, Rev J
I saw Trey and Classic TAB at the Ryman last night in Nashville and he was fucking phenominal. And he was def feeling it too. This was my third time seeing Trey in one of his solo efforts and this was by far the best. And if your talking about the Nashville show, it wasnt like that at all. Everybody was up dancing and we baked that place out. It ended up being pretty chill. The only thing that sucked was that there was no lot, cuz there wasnt a place for it But had a great time and was def worth the $40.
glad you had a good time. i was going on my past experiences at the ryman (in relation to seating). although, i find it hard to justify 40 and 50 dollar tickets anymore... personally, i'd rather support more under the radar things
Michael Hedges: So influential for many acoustic guitarists https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EMRB6BE2iI"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EMRB6BE2iI Neil Schon of Journey: even in the pop years he still has some great riffs and solos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBuHXXfn5Bg"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBuHXXfn5Bg
hedges is almost too fucking sick! i've pretty much given up (at least temporarily) at getting that style down to the level where i'm comfortable bustin it out.

Gorilla: I remember seeing a little thing on MTV News years ago about Hedges (I know strange place). I saw Michael Manring do a solo clinic at Berklee college of music in '93 that was way cool. I intern at Hyde St. Studio in SF. Back in the day it was called Wally Heiders Studio. There is a story about when Santana was recording Abraxas there they went and was Derek and the Domino's at the Fillmore. After the show Clapton and Santana's crew came back to the studio and started jamming. Neal Schon was only like 16 Carlos was too out of it on acid to join them and Clapton was just about to ask Neal Schon to join Derek and the Domino's as second guitarist when Carlos snaked him. Largeamount, Derek is a madman. Especially considering that Clapton hired him to play all of Duane Allmans slide parts from Layla on his latest tour. I also love how Derek does those microtonal Indian influenced lines on Slide. If you get a chance check out The stuff He does on Jimmy Herrings "Lifeboat" album. Zombie, I also love Holdsworth. The album of Jazz standards he did I think it was called None too Soon was fantastic. I allways thought Vernon Reid from Living Colour played like Allen Holdsworth on crack. Also Mad props for being the guy that Van Halen stole 2 handed tapping from. It'sallgood, Dude I remember seeing the Jeff Healy Band in Roadhouse. That was pretty cool. I also came to realize that Roadhouse is just a Redneck Samauri Movie. If you think about that as you watch it it is a little more interesting. Also loved Healys Angel Eyes. It's kind of hard to fuck up a John Hiatt tune. Check out Iggy Pop's cover of Something Wild. Peace Out, Rev J
You also have to love this exchange from Roadhouse: Patrick Swaze: Not bad for a blind white boy. Jeff Healy: Yeah and I thought you'd be taller. Peace Out, Rev J
